[Wireless] Rogers and iPhones: A Sucker's Paradise

When it comes to money management, I realize some folks aren't the sharpest tool on the bench and others are as dumb as a bag of hammers, but this has to take the all time prize for stupidity in ANYONE's books:

said by some idiot :

Total cost of the 5S for me :

$330 + 50 + 15 + 300 (tab) + tax = 785.35 less $50 rebate = $735.35 plus increased monthly fees of $20 per month * 24 months plus tax = $542.40 (increase to meet min voice and data requirement plus I LOSE 3gb of data per month)

Total cost of 32gb 5S = $1277.75

Just another post from Rogers community forums. UNforking believable......

That is unbelievable but I am not surprised. Some people are willing to pay any amount of money for the latest gadget and as you said - they are idiots!

Not idiots, just ignorant... as in misinformed.

I don't think anyone would sign a contract if they saw it broken down like that.

Then again... for a lot of people it's a business deduction and Rogers is their carrier.

All in all it comes down to being informed and making the decision that's right for you. Personally I pay 84 bucks for two phones with two Galaxy Ace's for free.

I look at a phone as a utility and not a fashion statement, I'm not so easily parted with my money.

@Hooter

Yea, a couple weeks back some shmuck posted that his monthly Rogers bill was $350 and he was griping about some extra $7.99 charge on his bill.

I replied that he was already shelling out $4,200 a year to Rogers and he should be more concerned about that.

WELL, my post lasted EXACTLY 6 SECONDS before one of Rogers loons DELETED it pronto. I think I broke my own personal best time at having one of my opinions trashed over in Rogers Wonderland.

Still laughing at that one...............

Why even post stuff there, since you can't ever post any criticism...

That's why DSLR is such a great place... You know their social media team monitors this place... they dont post much, but they know what people say, but they can't mod it.

If you want stuff like that SEEN - Then really, you'll have to do screenshots, and/or "repost" them or text via Twitter or Reddit to get real eyeballs.

•Naturally, of course you're not going to leverage social media to work in your favour because its "too much pointless work" for you personally. So you're at the mercy of rCable's censorship on their own forums or anywhere else they exert media control.

It's exactly what I said on George Burger's The Agenda thread.

People don't want to shell out $700 for that shiny Iphone, they want it for free, not realizing it's not free, and they pay significantly more down the road then if they paid for the phone outright and shopped around for service.

No, I didn't. Honest... I ran out of gas. I... I had a flat tire. I didn't have enough money for cab fare. My tux didn't come back from the cleaners. An old friend came in from out of town. Someone stole my car. There was an earthquake.......

So Rogers is after protecting the important customer demographic incapable of multiplying $350 x 12 on their own? Interesting....

Okay, what I don't get... they were obviously able to go through and do the math. But couldn't be buggered to just buy the damned phone, unlocked and unsubsidized right from Apple for $925.47?

~$350 cheaper over the 2 years, and they keep their extra 3GB of data per month, AND have a carrier-unlocked pentaband phone to boot....

This Rogers phone SCAM just keeps getting more BIZARRE:

said by ANOTHER Rogers victim :

Rogers screws up upgrade then charges me $900:

I called in about a month ago in august to upgrade my phone and plan at the end of my contract, standard procedure. I was supposed to pay $200 for the new phone plus $25 per month for the plan. The agent tells me all I have to do in bring the phone and SIM card to my local rogers store and they can set everything up for me. After activating the phone the worker at the store tells me the old plan has been cancelled and I can start using my new plan. Relatively painless. Recently I checked my account to pay my bills and found a $500 charge for two phone numbers: $250 for the phone about $50 for the new plan on the NEW number that's been set up on my account, and $150 charge to my old plan which was supposedly cancelled. Apparently I've been using the old plan, which is why I've been charged additional fees. They sent me back and forth blaming different departments for the mistake, but eventually they told me they need to charge me a cancellation fee including the cost of the phone if I want to cancel the new number which I never used (everyone's been calling me on my old number) which will be $460 on top of everything else I have to pay. If i keep the new number I get the new plan (which is not the plan I agreed upon on the phone with the agent) I still have to pay for the costs of old plan/number. They then suggested that I can keep my old number and get another upgrade but the best plan they can offer that's comparable with the plan I got in august will cost me $130 before taxes. Thanks Rogers.

Good news I qualify for an early upgrade.. what phone did you want... thinking Iphone5.

(I swear you could hear the calculator in the background) ok with cancellation fees, and upgrade fee and blah blah.. 450 bucks.

WHOA what cancellation fees, you called me I didn't call you!!!

You are 100% correct! I actually got banned today because they did not like what I had to say and claim that I violated their precious guidelines! The funny thing was that I posted and then my wife posted a reply. But because the two posts came from the same IP address, they have assumed that I must have posted both comments. Nothing but a bunch of arrogant moderators on that site!

How does this even happen? Maybe it is because I do not upgrade my phones early, but I have been grandfathered for years on my account (I cannot get what I get anywhere else, but that is besides the point)

Is this something new since the new plans and programs (2 year) has come out? Are people no longer being grandfathered when they get new phones?

If that is the case, I may be shopping around when my iPhone5 is "paid off"

Pretty much - if you want a new, subsidized phone they won't let you grandfather your monthly deal.
