Construction in Anjou, Montreal

Hi,

Yesterday when I came back from the theater, I passed by the two DSLAM next to my house (sorry if I used a wrong term, see link below for a picture).

They are digging in front and on the side of each brown box. I also saw cable in the air unattached (hanging). Is there someone who has an idea of what's going on here ? We already have FTTN... maybe FTTH is coming ?

Picture: »maps.google.ca/maps?q=george+%2F···,,0,5.12

You'll find one box on the left of the picture and one on the right.

Thank you.

Could be adding more capacity if the box is getting full...

Yes, pretty much the same. However, there's more hole in the ground but I think the goal stay the same.

I actually live in Anjou right next to where SquadG is referring to.
I was about to go ask the contractors that are digging up if they knew what was planned, but they left as I walked out of my house. They spray painted lines where they started cutting and digging up, that go from that brown cabinet box (DSLAM?) and to the utility poles both sides of the street where the copper wires from nearby house's terminate. There's white pvc pipes laying around also...
I'll go ask them tomorrow if I get a chance

Seem like a stupid question but are the barricades the same colours with no logo ?

There is the same orange markings and flags that go further in the direction of the picture to another JWI with a stinger that service an area where Bell decided to lay new wires after Hydro-Québec installed new poles.

Don't know though if the wires are fiber as i didn't bother to look carefully.

I didn't see any barricade (like on the above picture). All I saw was "cones de construction orange" like on the highway or on the road to block a line. I'll try to take a picture later today if I pass by.

Btw, if I were them and had to run new cable, I'd run fiber instead so they do not have to do the job twice !

We limit how many people go on the fibre lines the feed the node to avoid a bottle neck at prine time like you get on cable, so if demand has exceeded what was originally anticipated then yes they'll have to do the job twice

I took a little walk and went and ask one of the guys that was laying some pvc looking pipes in the trench. He said that there's already fiber and that they're putting in more. They're was no company names on their trucks. They pourred concrete were a bunch of different diameter pipes are sticking out of for a new cabinet. I asked if it was for fiber to the home, one guy didn't know but another one told me yes it will be eventually...

The couple of guys that are working there don't seem to be very aware of what it's going to be for exactly. I noticed the new trench and pipes pass in front of the old cabinet, maybe 3 or 4 feet, but doesn't lead to it, anyways not yet. The old cabinet is in the corner of the street, where as the placement for the new one is lined up with the poles and aerial wires feeding the houses. On the side of the street where the new cabinet will be, they dug up until the pole, and there's spray painted lines on the sidewalk and street that leads to the pole on the other side. It could be for more capacity, because there's a lot of apartments in the neighborhood. I have had FibeTV for about 3 years now or more. If I remember correctly , we were one of the first neighborhoods in Montreal to get it. So maybe that cabinet is full ?

We may be the first one to get FTTH then ! Haha.

Seriously, yesterday I saw that they digged a big hole in the back of the building's parking. I'll see later today.

I am wondering why they traced line between the two brown box on the street. It's maybe full but in term of speed, I see no problem on my side... still getting 25/10 24h/24h, 7d/7d.

Will see..

I find that stupid to "add capacity"... they should add FTTH instead. FTTH support the speed FTTN has to offer and it will add capacity as well. Also, people living near there would probably change fot FTTH speed (I will...)... But, it's maybe because they want to do pair-bounding.

Looking at the picture with the concrete pad, based on the size of the pad it looks like they're installing a 7330.

In your area, are the Bell distribution wires aerial or buried?

If by distribution wires you mean the wires going to the houses, then it's aerial

Yea, the wires going to the house. I know that Bell is upgrading a lot of the aerial areas to FTTH however their are a bunch of factors that contribute to the decision to upgrade an area.

When the cabinet gets installed take a picture and post it here and we'll be able to identify it for you.

Sure, I'll go take some more pictures later, but there's no cabinet yet, and neither any wires or fiber, they're just laying down some pvc pipes from one side of the street were there's already a brown cabinet (bigger then the cement pad that they poured) to an other brown cabinet on the other side of the street, that's exactly like the first one. And then to a pole were the current service wires are, and finally spray paint the size of the trench to from an other side of the street towards the service wire pole. And the company doing the work is TCI, yellow and grey colors trucks.

The pad for the new cabinet looks exactly like this:

»MarkBooth.zenfolio.com/p559391688/e1434810b

And hoping it ends up looking like this after the work is done :P

»MarkBooth.zenfolio.com/p559391688/e14761ddc (the one on the right)

The picture you show for "hope" is fot FTTH, right ? I assume that because it's in a desert of new construction !

It's quite possible that it could be for FTTH.

It looks like they also dug out space for another cabinet next to one of the brown one that's already there. Smaller then the existing one, but bigger then the new one on my pictures.
Judging quickly, the size would be similar to the one on the left of this picture

I can't take pictures, because they're pretty quick at covering up the parts that they're not working on with plywood.

Yes those are pictures from a 2010 FTTH install in Ontario.
Very informative pictures with some comments if you take a look at the whole gallery...

I'll look that closely to see if they are coming with that because FTTH overwhere would be just too awesome !

EDIT: They have patched everything and now there's only small empty box undergroud ! I guess to add a cabin later.
