[Apps] Gmail for Android hints that ads are on the way

quote:
The days of an ad-free Gmail experience on Android may be coming to an end. According to Android Police, the latest version of Google's email app contains references to built-in advertisements.

As if the new YouTube ads in the middle of the videos aren't frustrating enough.

I'm not sure if I understand the difference, Gmail is web mail on a PC.

On a Droid it's an app - which I have no plans in upgrading if it will be ad-laced

The new ad-laced version should be sitting on your phone.

I am not installing this version or any further unless there's some mitigating factor that requires me to do so. ~ YMMV ~

I use the k9 mail client. Pretty much just as good and some tasker integration.

I just updated too. I like the little check mark when you select a message.

This is where a rooted phone with Adaway App come in handy. It does not make a difference what app uses Ads...

Not sure since I've declined the app update until I'm sure what's under the hood.
From what I read - I highly doubt I will. Unless others provide screenshots from non-rooted phones without ad-away or similar ad blocking apps.

Some screenshots would be appreciated on what you're seeing, if you've got some time.

Thanks.

Some reviews on the Play store are saying they are seeing ads with this update.

Also, quite a few are complaining that the update sent their phones into an endless boot loop!

I think I'll pass on this update. I only use Gmail for junk email, so I don't really care about updating it. The last update added some label junk feature which is annoying enough.

Thanks for the feedback, La Luna See Profile - I've passed on the update as well.
The Gmail version installed now works just fine.

Gmail already has a million ads running alongside. Add to that the tonnes of spammy mails and promotions. Where is this leading to?

If this annoys me enough, it's leading to where it came from - using one of the services for which I already pay, and directing my alias there instead. Or, paying google some nominal fee to skip the ads. That's a fair trade in my book. I do like many features of gmail but everybody's got their tipping point.

Stop using the GMail App, I have never used it, just the generic mail app.

I'm stopped at Gmail app version 4.5.2 and will not upgrade.
Can you define "generic email app" ?

Just the vanilla App that came with My Asus Transformer in addition to GMail which I have never used.
If you device only came with GMail, I am sure there are plenty of mail clients in the market

My Galaxy Nexus was delivered with Gmail & I do use it as a mobile account - I would not be aware of a vanilla app that would be comparable.

Stop using the GMail App, I have never used it, just the generic mail app.

Or continue using the superior gmail app and uncheck the promotional inbox tab.

adaway doesn't block these ads. only the ability to click them (host file takes you to 404)

So you say... I have not seen a single ad yet on the gmail. So I guess either it works or my cell's latest gmail is extra special...

Interesting you can determine that since you have no idea exactly what I use.

Only thing I find superior about GMail is its annoyingness, and that it won't go away without going to a custom ROM. Though at lest rooted you can reliably deactivate it.
