User account "capabilities" have changed??

Can someone explain this capabilities thing in more detail anyway? I think I was at level 6 and now i'm at 3. dont know what it means, or how to move up, but some insight would rock.

Your actual 'capabilities' have not changed; Justin has just done some tweaking to 'levels', including showing how far until the next level.

I applied some deflation across the board that has no change other than the number.
next I will revamp the rewards for contribution to reflect the site as it is, rather than as it was in 2001.

I have a hope that the levels can unlock some helpful things in future and not just be for show.

Hell, my contribution as an FAQ starter-upper-er and editor, the numerous new articles i have posted (or given heads up to Karl), and my blog of articles im writing on the SamKnows whitebox. come on Justin, I should be a level 19!

i have had my account for over 12 years, these are my stats:
Posts: 667
Visits: 2071

not very high considering age of my account...
makes sense why my level is what it is...

I never even paid attention to that before. How high, in theory, do the levels go?

They're nominally open-ended. Under the old system, there was a user at level 5281; I don't know what the level is under the new system.

To answer the question, the people with the most XP are

Karl Bode

lilhurricane

(and so on down)

XP gets translated to levels now at first easily, and after a few levels, every 100k XP
Only 9 people are over level 30, based on the current 100k per level measure.

The way XP is calculated is going to change, as it doesn't reflect the current activity on the site - it is unbalanced and misses some important things like Kudos or gaining an MVM or VIP tag etc.

When it changes I have no idea what the points will be but I expect 99.999% of users will be somewhere between level 0 and level 25 with only a few way beyond that.

There won't be any magical site abilities available beyond level 10 which a frequent user could reach in a year. It should be academic only beyond that point.
