Cary,NC: packet loss, high latency

Hello,

Has anyone else in this area been experiencing internet issues? For the last week this has been an intermittent issue at different times and now the hotline has a pre-recorded message that there is an issue in the area. Troubleshooting more than a week seems a bit long.

I'm on a business line at Regency Park and haven't noticed any issues.

I am seeing the problem you are seeing in Cary in the Northwest Raleigh. All destinations are experiencing high latency and I am seeing periods of packet loss.

I had the same issue here in West Cary a few nights ago. Latency increased significantly, and bandwidth dropped below a megabit. Internet was mostly un-usable for several hours. Have not noticed any issues since.

About a month ago TWC sent me a notice that they were re-claiming some analog channels (ch. 22/23 and some others) for digital use on or around the October 8th time frame. I'm guessing that these channels are being reclaimed for digital channels and DOCSIS 3. Maybe this is whats causing the recent slowdowns across the local area? I'm still on a DOCSIS 2 modem, so I have no idea if any channels have been recently bonded, but I did reset my modem the night I was having the speed and latency issues and noticed my modem sync'd back up to a different upstream channel than usual.

Does anyone in this area have a DOCSIS 3 modem that shows how many channels are currently being bonded on the downstream/upstream? The notice also does mention their intention to deliver "more robust internet speeds."

I actually switched from a docsis2 to 3 in hope this would help with the intermittent slowdowns but as far as I can tell the issue must be behind the port in the access hub.
I am currently seeing 4 bonded upstream channels. My most recent issues were 10/3 at 5:03pm and 10/4 at 12:07pm

@rr.com

How bad are these slowdowns, and how long do they last?

Outside of that one evening, I have't noticed anything. Around this time of evening I sometimes will see some congestion on my DOCSIS 2 modem, but I won't notice it unless I'm downloading a file or run a speed test, and then, usually I'm still getting around 10 Mbps. I can sorta live with that for now but I am paying for 20 Mbps, which I always see except for late evening.

There's a lot of nearby construction going on in the area I live in. 2 weeks ago crews damaged a line outside our neighborhood and our service partially went out. Internet was flaky, and most digital channels were broken up and distorted. TWC found the damaged cable the next day and replaced it. Have also had issues in the past where there was a problem upstream causing horrible slowdowns that often usually require several neighbors on the same node to call up and complain, then they usually investigate and fix it. Ask your neighbors if they are having similar issues.
