I just recently blew up a voice coil in a subwoofer and I learned a lot about the voice coil...come to think about it, it's pretty simple. Which I wonder why make it for the average guy hard to repair....it makes me want to ask for extra voice coils to buy when I buy a woofer...
I find it interesting that a voice coil or surround can make a speaker trash worthy, when those parts are inexpensive to get.
This is an interesting video and I will rebuild my speaker...because the voice coil is the only thing that is bad.
My subwoofer has aluminum cone and rubber surround...i just removed the rubber surround and still need to figure out how to remove the center cap...letting it soak with goo gone for the night....i would like to bring this woofer to life and back again if I ever burn the coil again.

That is because replacing the surround, or worst, the voice coil, is quite labor intensive, and as you probably know, time = money.
Few people are willing to DIY something like this.
It's definitely not an easy task and does require precision, patience, and several hours work.
However, I have seen a few woofers which are designed to be re-coned by the end user. The spider and surround are held in place by clamp rings held together by screws. All that is necessary to replace the whole cone assembly is a screwdriver.
