Re: on the back of the x1 box

The eSATA port is for an external hard drive for additional storage. Currently, X1 doesn't support that, and it sounds like it may never as Comcast may follow others and start using 'cloud' storage instead of local.

The HDMI inputs may be designed as pass-thru's, but are probably disabled. The SDCard is probably also disabled.

The USB is usually also disabled, but may supply power to run a light or cooling fan.

It's normal for boxes to have additional port or inputs as they are designed for multiple MSO's and some features may or may not be used.

Yes, up to now, Comcast had been stating that they would not be supporting external HDs on the XG1 box, but then I saw this recent post from Ted Hodgins on the Comcast Support forum that says they now have plans to activate the eSATA port at some future time:

Any idea when you plan to open the esata port on the Pace px001anm in the sacramento ca area? I understand that you are planning on going to the clould but that solution has some drawbacks in my opinion. First, I would guess you arent going to give everyone a terabyte of storage in the cloud. Second playing from the cloud is limited to download speeds, upload speeds, time of day congestion etc. None of which are present with a connected storage device throiough the esata port.

Thanks

For our customers on the X1 Platform, we do have plans for additional DVR storage via a cloud DVR system as well as a current roadmap item to activate the e-SATA port.

No definite timeline to announce on that right now but both of those items are currently on the roadmap.

Storage options and pricing options have not yet been announced. The premise and goal is that the cloud DVR will provide a seamless experience and the opportunity to access your DVR recordings from any connected device.
