Still no BYOM on vdsl anywhere?

So, after getting bad service for years with Bell Internet, Don't know how long it's been but since the black speedstream home gateway apeared on bell, well I am finally changing over. So I have found myself with a nice new cellpipe VDSL modem which was originally purchased from Bell, and I was told by TSI that I cannot use it. I have been reading up on the BYOM issue and it seems to be pretty common, so here is my question, is there any ISP that I can use my modem with? Or is there a work around that I may use, like renting for a month and returning after a month? I refuse to pay 150$ for a new modem when I have a perfectly working here at home. Adsl is out of the picture for me since I want something faster then 15/1.

Yes, you can use it. Teksavvy can't prevent you from using your Cellpipe modem but they do require you to buy a new modem even though you don't need it. And you're right. It is nonsense.

Well I know I can use it, the reason I want to use it is because I don't want to buy a new one. So it dosen't really solve my problem...

You want the service you buy what they require otherwise no service for you. It is not that hard.

You may be able to use the modem you have but not for the VDSL speeds.

It is your own decision not to pay for a new modem. These are the rules. As simple as that.

It's actually Bell that required (past tense) new users that signup to have a sagemcom serial number in order to activate.

That process has changed and bell no longer requires a sagemcom serial to signup.

Teksavvy just hasn't updated their process to allow this. Currently there isn't any technical reason why teksavvy can't allow BYOM right now (in the past this wasn't the case)

Because they have a "warehouse" full of modems, that they are stuck with. If everyone BYOM like on cable TPIA, it'd cost them a bundle in inventory writedowns to get rid of them.

No, I didn't. Honest... I ran out of gas. I... I had a flat tire. I didn't have enough money for cab fare. My tux didn't come back from the cleaners. An old friend came in from out of town. Someone stole my car. There was an earthquake.......

They would still be able to sell their modems as there are few sources of VDSL modems and your avg joe won't know any better.

Why would I want to buy a closed, Bhell Branded modem, when I can get the real thing, but yeah your right, the average joe won't know the difference.

Apparently there is a firmware update for the sagemcom that removes some (if not all) of the bell branding and hopefully fix the sync-no-surf issue with samgemcom+stinger combination. Who knows about the bridge mode speed issues though

Yeah that is supposedly coming, but the modem will still be under bell's firmware control. meaning they can update it and introduce bugs, and people will have to wait months for updates... Look at the sync no surf bug... well over a year now.

At this point, we're probably all better off with the SmartRG. Cheaper, (much) smaller, lower power usage, no restrictions, no problems...

For sure... Small sample size for me using the SmartRG for a day, but the stats look great, I was expecting it to be much closer to the limits but I have better SNR & attainable numbers than either Ikanos based modems Cellpipe or Sagemcom.

The stats page is also live and it updates every 10 seconds or so, so you can actually see the numbers change without a resync.

Is this confirmed? I actually got a CSR that agreed to activate me after 2 hours of playing "get transferred to everyone around teksavvy" until my phone died. I might try to do the same. Also
I been reading a lot of negative reviews from them recently. I know they are cheap, and I dont really care for CSR as long that there Inet has no major functioning issue. And no billing issues like Bell...

I can tell you that I got rid of my $8/month VDSL modem rental just two weeks ago with TekSavvy. I was renting the Cellpipe, and when Bell dropped the requirement for the SN, there was a discussion in direct forum on getting rid of the rental fee for those who were using their own modems, Marc said that they would do it, so I asked in direct forums and they said ok so i sent the modem back and after they received it they told me the rental was removed, and indeed it was on my next invoice.

FYI... BYOM is being worked on. We need to make some changes to systems/forms but hopefully we will have it open soon.

Well its not next month that I need to BYOM, if you cannot do it for me, well, I guess if you refused to do it, I will go with electronic box. They are bit more expensive, but no to modem fees.

That is something we are currently doing. What isn't ready yet on the large scale are new orders as the webforms need to be changed.

As for existing customers, we have two "unofficial" ways of removing the rental:

1) Customer returns modem, rental fee stops.
2) Customer pays $85, Customer owns modem, Rental fee stops.

We haven't yet fully launched # 1&2 as we don't want to make things crazier than they already are.
