ev98 join:2007-06-17 Waterloo, ON | [rCable] 150/10 overage clarifications, two TPIA connections Just a few questions before I kick off an order.
* For the Elite 150/10 plan in Rogers territory with 400GB usage, does the $25 maximum overage cost still apply - or is there no upper bound like some of the other cable ISPs?
* If 150/10 has a max overage at $25, once it is hit (so at $0.50/GB, 450GB total), from what I've pieced together here I'd be bucketed into the "general" prioritization group, correct? Would this prioritization then be until the next month or billing cycle?
* To confirm, does the capped 150/10 plan have a daily fair usage (10GB/day) prioritization policy? From my reading of »Unlimited plan policy confusion capped plans should not have this QoS-style prioritzation in effect.
For the record, I'm not asking with the intent to be terribly abusive... my pfSense box shows that I'd be between 300GB and 400GB monthly, not accounting for peak periods, and I suspect that most of this could be done from 2-8am.
Additionally, I'd intend to set this up as a new line of service in addition to another TPIA connection, and maintain both at the same time. The way I've heard to do this when I first got involved with TPIA setup a few years ago was to place it as a new service order, but mark the address with a notation of "Basement" or "Office" so that our favourite red incumbent wouldn't cancel the order for having two services in the same location. Is this still the preferred process?
Many thanks. |

To clarify, it's not the same as prioritization - ie that only prioritizes when there is contention, whereas the overage cap is speed reduction at all times until the end of the month. The purpose for the overage cap is as a courtesy safety stop for billing and not designed as a defacto $25 unlimited package. If you're purposefully expecting to hit the $25 overage every month then you're likely not going to be happy with the speed and should pick another option that is better suited, such as the 45/10 with unlimited which then uses prioritization instead.
In regards to a second connection, no problem and no need to fudge up an address - you can just setup a new install as normal.
Thanks. |

ev98 join:2007-06-17 Waterloo, ON | Thanks very much for the clarification - that makes sense to be a bit more aggressive with speed reductions on 150/10. Overall the cap+slow/unlimited+priority options seem to be reasonable network management policies. I understand that at the top end package you want to avoid people absolutely maxing things out because it's quite costly to the ISP with the current CRTC sanctioned tariffs.
I'm fairly confident that I wouldn't be reaching the 400GB monthly cap, but it's good to know what happens if that situation were to occur.
If you wouldn't mind, could you be more specific as to the speed decreases after reaching the plan cap? (I know they may be subject to change at any time, or may not be explicitly laid out to avoid potential for abuse.) If possible, is it just download speeds, or both up/down - and are we talking speed reduction to something like to a 6Mbps/256Kbps package or "too much traffic, you get the equivalent of dialup"?
Also - what's the fee for speed/plan changes after signup, in the event I wanted 150/10 capped to be changed to 45/10 unlimited? |
