 | [Cable] NEW MODEMS! I have a simple question, but I'll lead in to it to make it post-worthy. I own myself a DCM425 and of course am running close to the point where I will need to upgrade my hardware to a DOCSIS 3 counterpart. Viewing the Teksavvy website I see that Rogers has approved some new DOCSIS 3's (a new Motorala SB and the DCW775.) I love the DCW775 and want it. My router has recently also died, 6 years running so it was about time, and I'd definitely like to kill two birds with one stone and get this amazing modem/router combo. Unfortunately, I'm in a Cogeco area and the only approved modems are the SP 3000 and DCM476. To my question, finally, is there a way to petition, or otherwise request, that an incumbent add a modem to their TPIA approved list?
Thank you very much in advance, - Krak |

1 recommendation | If you want to pay the approval charge for a new modem, I'm sure an incumbent will gladly add a new modem! It's quite steep, which is why TPIAs don't get many approved.
And I don't know where you go the idea that the modem router combo's are amazing. The general concensus on most of these gateway units is that the modems are OK, but the routers are poor. |

 | Well, I of course believe 2 separate pieces of hardware are better, not only for the fact that they each purposely only do their job, but also for troubleshooting. Maybe I'm just to caught up in the Modem's theoretical specs via research.
How much is the approval charge? |

And depending on the incumbent in question, v c r s t - upwards of $8K+ per unit for second level testing, and they request like five or six units at a time to perform their test batteries with. So in total you're looking at around maybe $50K - $60K all told, and thats no guarantee for approval.
Search the forum and Canadian Broadband regarding some of that second level testing, theres a few threads floating around.
Yeah hurts doesn't it? Like sbrook said, "Steep!". --

Looks like I'll be getting a brand new DCM476, might as well take it from TS. |

I think it is $8100 ish for the testing, and 6 modems worth another $300, but I think the total cost is under $10,000. Still no guarantees of course, and still insanely expensive.
I'd love to know if I'm wrong on that -- electronicsguru.ca |

Looks like teksavvy has some new approved modems in their rogers cable approved list.

The DCW775 has an issue where the WAP (wireless portion) on it simply just dies out or begins to drop connetions consistently, wouldn't recommend it. |

that price seems a little high for some reason
when i worked at magma ( yes the byers brothers) on the overnight shift when things were quiet we tested modems. and it didnot cost that amount of money. we had dummy accounts that would connect to bell. magma had lots of very knowledgable techs that built a very big business. rogers has just recently bought all the magma/primus data centres. they have had a hands off approach upto now. even rogers knows enough not to mess with a good thing |
