Malware or virus called to clean for $$$

My dad is in his 70's and never uses the internet to buy, etc. He calls the companies and does it over the phone. Called me yesterday 2 pop ups he couldn't close and foreign accent girl just called him about infection and need to discuss $$ to clean it up. To big a coincidence for me. He's 600 miles away but talked him thru msconfig and removing 2 win7 etc out of startup in safe mode. Reboot and firewall is deactivated. Running current AVG with current updates. Caller ID showed 234567890

Any ideas?
How the heck they get his phone number?
Thanks,
Gary

From ~4500 miles away -
My guess is that there isn't a connection between the popup windows & the phone call, just coincidence.

Popup windows do not capture the computer owners phone number.
Phone calls do not generate popup windows on the owners browser.
(I'm assuming the popup windows occurred during an open browser session)

re the popups - they happen.
re the phone call see

for a better understanding of what that was probably about.

short story: based on those 2 events alone I see no reason for heightened concern.
