[WIN8] Windows 8.1 support Lifecycle

Microsoft Support:

quote:
Windows 8.1 builds on the foundation of Windows 8, and includes many enhancements and great new features in key areas like personalization, search, the built-in apps, Windows Store experience, and cloud connectivity. Windows 8.1 also introduces new manageability, mobility, security, user experience and networking capabilities for businesses.

The lifecycle of Windows 8.1 will remain under the same lifecycle policy as Windows 8 with support ending 1/10/2023. Windows 8 customers will have two years to move to Windows 8.1 after the General Availability of the Windows 8.1 update to continue to remain supported under the Windows 8 lifecycle.

To help make the update seamless for customers, there are deployment tools and guidance available. Visit the Support Lifecycle site or contact your Microsoft Support Professional for answers to additional questions you may have.

Service Packs are so... yesterday. Apparently, versioning is the new black at M$.

New? They liked how Vista lost it's negative stigma when being renamed Win 7. There were so many 9x versions it was annoying, if you had Win95 your support ended before Win98/ME, however the 98/ME versions all had the same eol. It just matters if they start charging again, and if they kill the support early. People expect ten years of support from Win 8, they already bought a license.

Yep they are taking a 'cue' from Apple who releases updates this type of way (ex. 10.8.6)

I doubt we'll see the term "service pack" used again in the future with Microsoft... (I say we have as much luck seeing them call something a SP as we do seeing a classic start menu return)

I'm sure we'll still see service packs for Office, though.
