JimCTPremium join:2006-01-11 Connecticut kudos:1 | [Chat] Ever feel like just going "offline"? I was watching the theatrical trailer for "Rush" (which looks to be a great film), when I suddenly had the urge to just go "offline" and ditch the cell phone, computer, and digital everything. Just felt like in the not-so-distant past, before all these whiz-bang electronic gizmos took over our lives, people were much more invested in their place in the world.... a time when we were more connected and yet less interconnected at the same time. A time when privacy still meant something. In short... things were simpler.. and maybe better back then. I've talked to some older folks who say the 1970s/early 80s were great times... many saying much, much better than today's world..
Anyone else want to just de-digitize from time to time?!? Or am I alone on this one? It's actually crossed my mind more than once. |

I feel that way a lot. But.... there is something to be said for "instant gratification" (whatever your gratification may be) which being online brings. Some people are addicted to that. Myself included. |

I've been doing it 1 or 2 weeks a year for the past 15 years. The only 'online' thing I'll have access to is my 7 year old 'dumb' cellphone in case of emergency. Don't miss any of it, but I do fear what'll be waiting for me when I return. -- The new Oldsmobiles are in early this year! |

There are Luddites and those who would step back from the Digital world and become Luddites. I have no problem with either.
I prefer to remain somewhere in the middle. I love gizmos and want to be the first to have the latest gizmo, but I don't let technology consume me.
My life doesn't need Facebook or Twitter and you won't find me walking around with a Cellphone glued to my face.
I remember and appreciate the simpler world. Technology has changed that world and I accept the change. It has changed me but I will never let it consume me so there is no need to contemplate "de-digitizing". |

Technology can be both liberating AND enslaving. What annoys me is watching all the people so glued to their cell phones everywhere I go, they don't even look around themselves. I am a big proponent of technology, after all, my first job as a young adult was working for the first company to sell industrial robots to the world so many eons ago. Rest in peace, Pop, glad our last years were good. Please pray for Colin, he has ependymoma, a brain cancer, donate to a children's Hospital. |

I remember the first time I felt like de-digitizing- I left my MacBook at an Apple Store for warranty repairs that took a little over a week. I didn't have tech withdrawal... in fact, I felt freer and less constrained. It felt great actually.
Sometimes I wonder if I would have been better off if I had never gone back to pick it up.. (no offense to anyone here) |

I've often gone on vacation with no laptop/smartphone/internet. It's a nice feeling sometimes. I don't feel that I have that online addiction that some people have, though - it's a tool, or something I kill time with when I'm alone, or a way to get in touch with people.
It's gotten very difficult to travel without a smartphone, though... they're just so damn handy to have on the road. And people expect you to have one when you're making plans to meet up. -- My music blog |

One thing I really should go "offline" with is FACEBOOK!
I am too often posting something, only to have people call or text me telling me to remove it, for whatever reason. In other words, I am always in trouble!
On the other hand, it really is nice to have been able to find and reach my high school classmates after nearly 30 years. |

No Laptop, smartphone, Facebook or Twitter. Basic cell phone. I don't text.
Lovely sunset tonight. I closed the pool, a few casts in the ocean and chatted with a guest for a few minutes. |

It's definitely not for everyone... but I have to say it's been a huge boon for me. In the last 3 days alone - I've had a semi-famous guitarist (touring with people like Diana Krall and Lou Reed) as well as a New York Times music reviewer share an article from my blog because they saw it on social media and liked it; I got a free ticket to a concert I wanted to go to after mentioning that I was thinking about going; I found out that an old friend of mine will be in Boston briefly and we made plans to hang out on Sunday. Plus I made very last-minute plans for a weekend out of town and instantly had people excited to see me and hang out in the cities where I'll be. So much nicer than having to call or e-mail all 10 people I know in NYC who might be interested in hanging out tomorrow night and trying to organize something on short notice.
It just makes all this social networking and friend-making and finding people and planning stuff so easy. -- My music blog |
