[DSL] Lag/time outs with various applications

Hi, I've been recently getting, or maybe noticing, stalling for lack of a better word, when using bandwidth intensive processes.

This will manifest itself as losing sessions while playing online games like BF3. Or when using youtube, videos will consistently stop loading about a quarter to halfway through.

Other functions, like http downloads, seem fine. There's no stalling if bandwidth for those is reduced.

Does anyone have any ideas about what could be causing this or how to troubleshoot this issue?

Hmmm. Insofar as YouTube is concerned, while people have noted buffering issues regardless of which internet connection you use ( »Sandvine: YouTube Issues Google's Fault, Not ISP Related ), I don't think they see the video just flat-out stop loading. Also not sure why online games would be having issues, since those usually don't actually use THAT much information (most games just send relatively small chunks of data, and leave it up to your client system to calculate and render everything). If you register for the site (it's free) you can send me an IM with your account info, and we can look into it and see if we can figure out what's going on there.

Otherwise... the most likely culprit I would think of is if some other computer or application is using up your bandwidth when you're not expecting it.

Thanks Nick, I just sent a PM with my account number.

In retrospect, the lag/drops when gaming could be due to someone else maxing out the connection. I'll try throttling everyone at ~.75Mpbs. With that said, I'm still not sure why videos would stop buffering completely.
