Half-Life 3 News!

Whoa?!

News via arstechnica.

said by arstechnica :

It exists!

Guys. GUYS! Are you sitting down? This is big, guys. Half-Life 3. It exists. Well, it exists as a trademark application. In Europe.

Still! It's really happening. The trademarking is happening, I mean. Who knows if the game is really happening at this point so many years after it was first announced. Remember when that voice actor said it wasn't happening? Well I've got something to show him. A little something called a trademark.

OK, OK, I'm calm. I'm calm! I promise.

Yeah, I know, maybe I've been driven crazy by the rumors and the hints—and most of all the deafening silence surrounding the game these past six years. But there it is in black and white pixels, right there on the webpage of the Trade Marks and Designs Registration Office of the European Union (just do a search if you don't believe me!). Valve filed for it two days ago and it covers "Computer game software; Electronic game software; Downloadable computer game software via a global computer network and wireless devices; Video game software," and "Provision of on-line entertainment; provision of computer and video games and computer and video game programs from a computer database or via the Internet."

That sure sounds like Half-Life 3 to me!

Reddit already exploded from it yesterday. I think 3 or 4 different posts/links with the same trademark stuff exploded to front page in no time.

As with Duke Nukem, I'll believe it when I'm playing it.

My guess we will see it in 2 years. Just hope it looks good and uses mantle.

I understand the relevance, but I can't bring myself to care. Probably because it's been so long since HL2 that I stopped giving a shit.

I think I was still a virgin when HL2 came out.

I'll believe it when I see it.

I used to tell the tale that from the time Duke Nukem Forever was announced to the time it was released, I graduated from high school and college, worked for two different companies, got married, went through two houses and an out-of-state relocation, bought and sold four cars, and had a son.

And no, my 2012 experience did not live up to my 1997 vision of the game. Obviously.

As much as I always admired and had fun talking to the 3D Realms crew, I have a lot more faith in Valve delivering the goods with HL3. I think my level of excitement for HL3 is more healthy: I had fun with HL and HL2 when they both released, as well as all the episodes and Portal games (which are definitely in-universe), and I'll look forward to HL3 like I'd look forward to another installment in a favorite franchise. I'm not expecting it to be the second coming, just a good time.

In contrast, DNF for me carried all the expectations of a teenager who wasted way too much time playing and modding Duke Nukem 3D in the '90s; a kid who was a vastly different person than the adult who wound up playing the long-delayed sequel. It was ridiculous. Nothing could have lived up to that.

I suspect that HL3 may be like that for some gamers, particularly ones younger than I. But not for me. And I'm good with that.

Now, Valve, just get it done.

I've always admired the Half-Life series. I'll never forget doing my first jump-then-crouch in the first game training levels. Games for me now in my life is more about experiencing the creative art of digital games. Very much looking forward to whatever HL3 will bring.

HL2 was pretty far ahead of it's time graphically. I'm wondering if Half Life 3 will be the same. (probably not though)

I fired HL2 up over the weekend. For a game that released in 2004, it just looks damn good. Not anything compared to today's standards, but you can definitely appreciate what it is.

Yeah they seriously lost the plot. It needed to be Duke Nukem 3D - 2, same style of gameplay as the first, but with much better graphics. Instead we got a path through each level we had to follow, with little to no exploring.
