Carpie join:2012-10-19 united state kudos:2 | Coming to NYC for the weekend My son (10 yrs old) has been wanting me to take him to the city for some time now and his birthday is next week so I'm going to bring him out this weekend. I've been to the City 3-4 times so can get around but certainly don't have any local insight. Hence why I'm posting
What are some "must-sees" in your opinion for a 10 year old? Right now the plan is to stay outside of the City Friday night (to save $ on hotels) and stay near Central Park on Saturday night. Rough ideas for things to do Sat/Sun are:
* Statue of Liberty * Ground zero * M&M store * Toys R Us in Times Square * Central Park and/or maybe a nearby museum
Looking for fun and affordable options (also suggestions on cool/fun places to eat?) and/or any local insight on discounts (i.e. tickets to statue of liberty). Planning to spend most of the time on foot/subway so that we can take in the city.
Thanks in advance. -- Absolution -- MSV: 6/6 0/6H -- HoF: 4/6 -- ToES: 4/4 -- ToT: 12/12 -- SoO: 6/14F 8/14 Pride and Ego -- MSV: 6/6 1/6H -- HoF: 6/6 -- ToES: 4/4 -- ToT: 11/12 -- SoO: 3/14F */14 |

 | Statue of Liberty is closed due to the federal government shutdown, but when open reservations are required to go inside the statue |

Looks like plans may change to Toronto to give my money to our friendly Canadian neighbors. -- Absolution -- MSV: 6/6 0/6H -- HoF: 4/6 -- ToES: 4/4 -- ToT: 12/12 -- SoO: 6/14F 8/14 Pride and Ego -- MSV: 6/6 1/6H -- HoF: 6/6 -- ToES: 4/4 -- ToT: 11/12 -- SoO: 3/14F */14 |

Coney Island! The weather's beautiful, rides are still open, and the NYC Aquarium would be great for him! |

The Museum of Natural History, on W 81st and Central Park West, is a great place for kids. They have a spectacular dinosaur collection. Right next door is the Planetarium. You can enter from the museum if you want to visit both on the same trip.
You won't get to visit the Statue of Liberty during the Government Shutdown but you can still get a good (free) view of it from the Staten Island Ferry. Other nearby places are the South Street Seaport and Wall Street. I don't know if you can still go on any of the ships but lunch on the pier, with a great view of the Brooklyn Bridge can be fun. They're all located within walking distance of the World Trade Center.
If you've still got time on your hands you can also walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. the pedestrian walkway is just east of City Hall.
Don't forget to take at least one ride on the subway. Most kids love it. |

Boat tour around Manhattan is great too. They have full and half circle tours. |

Carpie join:2012-10-19 united state kudos:2 | How do they do a full circle of Manhattan in a boat? Do they pick it up out of the water on the north side and run it through da Bronx? |

1 recommendation | Manhattan is an island. Technically part of it, Marble Hill, is now attached to the mainland since they rerouted the Harlem River, but the main part is still surrounded by water. |
