Microsoft Store:

quote:
If you're already running Windows 8 you'll be automatically upgraded to Windows 8.1 for free on October 17.

If you're running Windows 7, pre-order Windows 8.1 now.

What about those who do not wish to be automatically upgraded? On October 17 or any other date.

I think the phrase "damned if you do, damned if you don't" probably describes it most aptly. (However, I don't plan to resist the inevitability of it all.)

Me neither. But I may not wish to be automatically upgraded and even if I did, maybe not on October 17.

I would expect Automatic Updates to work as it usually does. If you have it turned on, then you'll have to turn it off and deal with updates manually until you're ready (if ever) to turn it back on.

Is that how it's going to be updated? Through the Windows Automatic Update mechanism?

If, as M$ says, it will be done automatically, then that's how I'd expect it to happen.

With their fascination with doing everything like apple these days, I would expect it to get updated via the app store

Calm down everyone. Here is the full quote from the webpage that chachazz See Profile has referenced.

quote:
If you’re running Windows 8, visit the Windows Store for a free update to Windows 8.1 starting on October 17. If you're running Windows 7, your files will easily transfer. If you're running Windows Vista or earlier, qualify for the free upgrade to Windows 8.1 by purchasing Windows 8 now.

The free update to Windows 8.1 for existing Windows 8.0 users will come out of the Windows Store. No mention of Windows update from inside of control panel.

That looks like a different quote entirely--nothing automatic about it.

Well, I see why now!

In the attached picture, we see a screen shot of the webpage in question.

The quote that chachazz See Profile posted is in the green box, and matches exactly to what he said.

My quote is in the red box, and matches what I said.

Now, we have a bigger question. On the same page, Microsoft is saying two different things, so which one is correct?

Sounds like a Modern/Metro Start screen vs. old-fashioned Desktop issue. (M$ is bipolar?)

A lot more information in the Windows Blog.

Bit confused here, is Windows 8.1 = Windows 8 SP1 ?

Yes. If you don't "upgrade" to 8.1 your Win 8 will lose support in two years, so yes it's a service pack, but they are not calling it a service pack, yet they said publicly 8.1 wouldn't be a service pack. Microsoft is chasing it's own tail.

Again, the big question I think most of us have on this site was asked by a user on the 2nd link that chachazz See Profile referenced.

Will customers running windows 8 be provided with windows 8.1 ISO?

because, in case PC crashed we would have to install windows 8 first and then windows 8.1 via store. That would be time consuming as well as cumbersome. I hope there will be other options available and not just the update via windows store.

I know there is a good number of us who post here that like to maintain install media for the operating systems we all support. In my case, I do have a purchased copy of Windows 8, and I then used the free upgrade to add media center.

If I have to re-install the OS, I have no problem doing that over and over, and adding media center back.

However, now that Windows 8.1 will be out, the only way that appears that I can get the update "for free" legally would be do follow these steps

1) Install Windows 8 Pro x64 from my purchased DVD
2) Upgrade to add Windows Media Center
3) Go to the store and upgrade to Windows 8.1

It would be a lot better, and a lot more "clean" in my mind to be able to have it be

1) Install windows 8.1 Pro x64 from DVD provided by Microsoft, as I own a legal copy of Windows 8
2) Upgrade to add Windows Media Center

While I understand that Microsoft just can't give away the actual install media for Windows 8.1, I would think there would be some way to contact Microsoft on this. Provide them your name, date / location of purchase of Windows 8, and your license key. Microsoft then takes that information, confirms that your copy is indeed registered to who you say it is, and provide the user with the full install media. That could be a link to download the ISO, or send the user a DVD or USB Stick with the install on it.

@Plencner

Think such a verification process would be cost prohibitive. Most people will never need to reinstall 8.1 prior to the next update/sp. So it would just be a waste.

Back in the floppy days the first disk of the qualifying OS was used to validate prior to upgrade copy install. Maybe they'll do something similar. Where 8.1 upgrade media can be obtained that uses 8.0 install media for validation.

Also in the passed with XP we used to be able to create SP "slip stream" installation media. Look it up. Maybe there will be similar capability with Windows 8.x.
