Scattershield
The 60 Corvette was making a grinding sound when starting up and I thought it was a starter issue. So two weeks ago I replaced the starter but the grinding continued...

My Corvette was dragraced by the previous owner (I purchased the car in 1983) and he replaced the Chevy bellhousing with a scattershield so to inspect the flywheel we had to remove the transmission and scattershield...

My kid brother Rick and I pulled the tranny in my 1960 Corvette. Kid brother did all the hard work and I assisted... he is 56 years old and a mechanic for 35+ years.

Here's some photos of the scattershield, flywheel and Muncie M21. As you can see the flywheel is pretty much chewed up. Rick was surprised the car even started... He said it was the worst worn flywheel he has ever seen...

The flywheel is a Mickey Thompson unit and has 168 teeth and has a diameter of 14 1/4 inches. My starter (both previous and present) have 9 teeth.

So it is the proper matchup (flywheel and starter)

Also Rick reminded me when we replaced the clutch and pressure plate 30+ years ago an auto parts identified the pressure plate as one for a Ford Bronco. The clutch is for a Chevy...

So looks like no more cruising for a while... Perhaps even next spring. The old girl is in the garage, the front wheels on ramps and the rear wheels on axle stands...

The scattershield is believed to be a Lakewood.

The joy of owning a 53 year old car... LOL

Now I am debating if I want to replace the scattershield with a regular Chevy bellhousing or even replacing the transmission with a Tremec 5 speed as the rearend is a Chevy 12 bolt positrack with 4:11 gears.... Or maybe just keep it as as is...

Going to think this over and not rush in...

sticking in a TR-6060 would be fun, 6 gears, would give you a bit more overdrive for highway cruising while still keeping a little kick for city driving.

The trans tunnel on a C1 Corvette (1953-62) is quite narrow but I'll do some research on that tranny...

One thing about the Muncie M21, it's not too heavy. Probably weighs 70 lbs and my back knows it. I had on the garage floor, than decided to carry it outside to rinse some of the grease & dirt off of it. Than I lugged it back into the garage put on the floor. Than a few minutes decided I wanted it on my workbench...LOL

Many thanks...

A 6 speed would be nice modern upgrade for it.

My '96 Tacoma is almost 18 years old and it's starting to
become not so joyful to own.

180,000 miles - things starting to go wrong.

18 years and 180,000....no shame in that. I'd say you got good service out of that Toyota...

Didn't those Tacoma's have serious frame corrosion issues to the point where there was even a recall?

My Tacoma has no rust for some reason. Probably because I got undercoating when I bought it.
but Ihave to get a new timing belt. If I do that I should get a new water pump. the muffler (original) now has a hole in it. I just put
in a new $150.000 battery. The shocks are shot, I think. There's a bi crack on the windshield. The motor is like it was when it was new - starts perfectly and no smoke.
So now I have to decide - sell it and buy a new one?
Or pay for all the things it needs?
How about a rebuilt engine?
There should be a computer program to answer that question.
RepoDepo had a 2008 Tacoma with only 35,000 kms a month ago
in Vernon - sold it in three days before I even had a chance to think about it.

Except the windshield, muffler and front shocks you can do all that other stuff in the discomfort of your own driveway.

Why are you contemplating replacing the engine if it starts, doesn't smoke and like new? What engine is it?

I don't know. I'm not very good at mechanical stuff.

Re: What I did last weekend...

Heh, just had the timing belt and water pump replaced on my trusty 97 Honda Civic with 279,000 miles on it! The stereo volume knob has a mind of it's own, the driver door lock solenoid doesn't work, air conditioner long gone, the rear fenders are rusting, but overall the car is running great! Maybe I'll keep it for another year or so!

if it's not rusting, as long as you have the patience to keep up on maintenance, that's if you want to keep it running good.

279,000 km is just barely broken in. Had a 1998 Civic with 730,000 km several years ago.

my sunfire was around there until the east coast had it's way with the uni-body in a real bastard spot(where the cross channel and the front-rear frame rail meet).

would have kept running if it didn't die one of the two ways the sunfire/chev does, either you have a dead engine and a perfect body, or a perfect engine with a shitty body, and if you try to swap them the electrical goes stupid. just can't win in that regard.

Read closely, I quoted miles! I bought the car in the USA, and imported into Canada!

Ok it's not barely broken in, but broken in. Still only 279,000 miles.
