If that was their intention it would make more sense to lower the price $20, not raise it $20. |

 | My opinion: For the amount of money we all pay for FIOS services, we should be entitled to the highest quality equipment they offer. We should not have to pay extra for routers which they offer to some for free, others for complaining, etc. I'm not going to buy their router, but their wifi is such a weak signal on their "standard" router that it's pathetic, and if they have a router which provides satisfactory, reasonable service, they should offer it to us for free. |

I got the Actiontec GigE rev. I Wireless N router as part of a 50 plan new install. My wifi devices maxed out in the mid 20s. I turned off the wifi in it, added an Asus RT-N66U as an AP and get high 30s, sometimes 40 for the same wifi devices. Your numbers will vary of course depending upon the capabilities of what your are connecting to wifi.
The RT-N66U runs about $150 but if you are patient you can find a deal for $100, though at this point I'd probably look for a deal on the AC version of that router. |

I only use verizon's router as a MoCA bridge to get data to the one cable box that I have. It so happens I have the unit with the Gig ethernet ports on it, however I have the wireless shutoff and nothing connected to LAN side ethernet ports. (Verizon's dmark handoff to me is ethernet not MoCA).
Reasons I did not use Verizon's router
1) I was unable to connect to certain services that were on non standard ports, the TCP handshake would complete but the connection always timed out with the router not passing data (confirmed via network traces and I got a deer in the headlights response from Verizon and Actiontec)
2) I wanted the flexibility of my own router (currently using a Cisco 1900 series router)
3) Verizon can access your router, reset your lost password and who knows what else. If they have access how do I know somebody else doesn't? I also don't know the extent of their abilities to access the router and I really don't trust Verizon. -- It's the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine |

Re: [Networking] Re: "The FiOS Advanced WiFi Router" ? said by TedD : I suspect that my monthly charges will remain the same as if I was still renting a router. I don't think anyone rents the router. It's, as far as I know, a no charge item for new installations. And, yes, Vz still owns it. However, just look at all the old ones for sale on Ebay |

They don't own it, it's part of the installation charge. Short of you canceling new service within a short "buyer remorse" period, you own it. In fact, they don't even maintain it beyond the warranty period, unless you are also a Fios TV subscriber. They only maintain it for the TV service, because the On-Screen guide and VOD won't work without the Actiontec somewhere in the loop. -- ROCK 'TIL SUNSET |

This is not true. Verizon wanted my Actiontec Rev F back when I canceled service. The return paperwork specifically mentioned it. -- University of Southern California - Fight On! |

Correct. The only exception is when they send you a replacement router they may tell you not to send back the old one. |

 | Plus, when I had VZ Fios installed, there was no installation charge. |

TH3_FRB join:2011-01-13 Virginia Beach, VA | So is there a version of the Actiontec that is WiFi-g but still has Gig-E ports? I only use the Actiontec to support my TV boxes and a new AC66U plus most of the house hard wired with cat6. I have a Gig-e switch plus an older wireless router (for legacy wireless-g and guest internet access) in the equipment stack that I could do away with and simplify if the Actiontec had Gig-E ports. I don't care to pay $100 for their newest (old) offering though. |

Their latest version (I think pictured in the link offering) MI424WR-GEN3I has gigabit lan ports.. However I have to say the routers wireless coverage is pretty abysmal. I ended up getting the router for "free" with my new install. |

Why not just connect everything to the gig-E switch? The fact that the Actiontec doesn't have gig-e ports doesn't affect anything since your WAN speed is less than 100Mbps. -- There are 10 kinds of people in the world; those who understand binary and those who don't.

TH3_FRB join:2011-01-13 Virginia Beach, VA | That's how I have it now. It would just be a matter of reducing the number of devices I need. The Gig-E switch and my older wireless AP could go away and I'd still use my AC66U as the primary WiFi AP. |

 | i couldnt stand the router verizon gave me,i swapped it out for an apple router and now i get 83/38 wirelessly instead of 30/20 with the verizon router |
