EverQuest 2 Free Level 85

Well, I guess for the next two weeks, you will be able to get a free level 85 character. Crazy! Or desperate?

said by PCGamer :

Over the next two weeks, the game is holding its “Hero’s Call”, which lets new and existing players secure a free Level 85 character or character upgrade. That offer ends on October 15th.

Never understood promotions like this. To me the fun of playing is the levelling and learning your class bit by bit.

Because the leveling process is so mind-numbingly boring in every MMO, people would rather skip that part of the game and go straight to the mind-numbing end game content right away.

The player base on this game has been around a long time. I doubt that there are many new players. From what I have read it was more about long time players complaining about not having the will to grind alts any more and the fear that they were driving away more players than they could hope to make up with new buyers.

I was a two account holder back when the game was fresh and they screwed over one of my accounts without care so I basically said "screw SOE!" and switched to WoW where I learned that you could actually have fun playing an mmorpg.

(Fortunately I eventually came to my senses and realized I could learn yet another language in the time I was mmorpging, went outside, got a tan and never looked back... )

There are ways to get around this without giving people free 85's. WoW has heirlooms for example.

The fact they obviously did a press release for it to go to PCGamer suggests that they are trying to entice new players, and as a new player I like to ease myself in gradually, not have a plethora of spells/abilities I have no clue on how to use.

Plus in all honesty who want to chose EQ2 as a new MMO? RIFT is the best "free" MMO about at the moment by far.
