New Speeds (not)

wow where do I start.

I checked my bill online this morning and it said I had "Ultra 101" for $15. I knew they boosted their speeds but didn't know they boosted them THAT much.

I just did 6 speed tests. 3 w/ Towerstream and 3 w/ Optimum all out of NYC. I did each server as wireless and wired thru router and directly to modem. As expected Optimum's readings were higher. That sort of throws up a red flag. That's like the instructions for a Duncan Hines cake saying "for best results use Duncan Hines frosting" blah blah.

Here are my results. (I have a Netgear N600 router. It's a refurb and a couple years old. I had a whole new line run to the pole a few months ago as well since I was having an echo on the phone (that has been fixed thanks to some posters here).

These three are thru Towerstream:
Wireless thru router, Router in next room over, thru 1 wall:

Wired thru router:

Wired to modem: (why it does this I have no idea. It was slower thru modem than thru router. it was extremely slow and choppy too)

Retested with Optimum:
Wireless thru router (now right next to router):

Wired to router:

Wired to modem:

Then I went back in the living room and did two more wirelessly via Optimum and Towerstream respectively:

I'll restart my modem and router in a little bit to see if it changes anything.

The main thing I don't understand is why the modem results are slower. I have a docsis 3.0. Do I need a different modem?

Re: New Speeds

Kind of hijacking this thread a bit.. but anyway..

What specific version/model of the N600 do you have? There are many different versions (WNDR3400 for example only has 10/100 ethernet ports). If it doesn't have gigabit ethernet ports, you'll never get full speed.

Also, what specific modem do you have? Have you checked your signal levels lately? »192.168.100.1

None of your speed tests are where they should be for the 101/35 tier, so you most likely have multiple factors impacting the performance (maybe signal level, most likely your router, your WiFi is definitely not working well).

As for the direct to modem test - you did reboot the modem after connecting it to your computer, right?

Since you are staying on CV's LAN Network and not going out to the Internet (where you are subject to delays as well as traveling on other ISP's networks) as you note the better speeds can be expected.

As to the Red Flag comment, I do not think that because you are using CV connectivity that the CV server is giving you better speeds (which I assume is what you are implying).

First are you sure the computer you are using has a 1Gbit port?

When you connect directly to the modem are you using Cablevision's own Ethernet cable? (I ask because its likely to be the newest one)

What model modem are you using?

What are the readings from the modem page( 192.168.100.1 )?

Have you spoken with Cablevision about this issue?

Also can you try using this speedtest, »www.ookla.com/demo ?

When you bypassed the router, were you possibly connected to a neighbor's open wifi to get the lower speeds?
