Short story, posted here verbatim.
compliments brand Super 8 Beef Burgers have been recalled because they may be contaminated with E. coli. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency said people have reported becoming sick after eating the burgers, but the number of cases was not released. The burgers were sold in Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador in Sobeys banner stores, which includes Sobeys, Foodland, FreshCo, and Price Chopper. The strain of bacteria is E. coli 0157:H7 and is the same one which contaminated the drinking water in Walkerton, Ont., in May 2000. The E. coli contamination resulted in the deaths of seven people, while 2,300 others became sick. LINK -- No, I didn't. Honest... I ran out of gas. I... I had a flat tire. I didn't have enough money for cab fare. My tux didn't come back from the cleaners. An old friend came in from out of town. Someone stole my car. There was an earthquake....... |

 | I have to wonder how many people out there routinely undercook meat. |

Ain't been sick yet..(of course there is always a first time). |

 | Do you just buy ground beef, or rather whole meat and grind it yourself? |
|
elwoodbluesElwood BluesPremium join:2006-08-30 HarperLand kudos:1 | Ground beef and pork. Under the current health standards I'd have to grind it in a refrigerator . |
|
 | Once a month or so I go to Costco and pick up two kilos of stew meat and grind and freeze my own burgers with a Nesco Meat Grinder.

Believe me, I can taste the difference. No floor sweepings in MY burgers |

It's 140 bucks for the grinder so the question lies is what's my cost recovery? I'd have to go to Costco to see stewing beef vs ground beef costs are to see(and I was just there earlier in the week). |
|

1 recommendation | When you're calculating costs you have to factor in the cost of crappy quality meat vs prime cut fresh ground.
Its the intangibles that put me over the scale, not the actual $ costs. |

Also I should point out that I bought my Nesco on Amazon two years ago for $99 and change.
Prices continue to rise on everything |

Where are you getting "prime cut" from Stewing beef? |
|
 | Costco beef is a grade better than you'll find in any supermarket, regardless of the cut.
Like I said, it's the intangibles that make it worthwhile and taste is the ultimate decision maker |

Btw, cooking your burgers pink with pork ain't a good idea no matter how you slice it We used to say when i worked in a kitchen "a little floor spice makes everything nice" that said, i buy my beef from a small butcher shop that does a high volume. My old boss at the steakhouse always said when picking an independant butcher just make sure he has LOTS of employees, means lots of volume! |

This is why I grind my own burgers nowadays.

The meat is very good no questions about it. -- No, I didn't. Honest... I ran out of gas. I... I had a flat tire. I didn't have enough money for cab fare. My tux didn't come back from the cleaners. An old friend came in from out of town. Someone stole my car. There was an earthquake....... |

dirtyjefferAnons on ignore, but not due to fear.Premium join:2002-02-21 London, ON | yes, the meat is top tier and the price is quite competitive...i can get their top grade meat for the same price as the no name packs from No Frills...the only "bad" thing is i need to buy more of it...i just freeze it, so no big deal, but if you can't afford to buy $20 worth of ground beef, nor have anywhere to store 4kg of it, it could be an issue. |

I have a good butcher around the corner, so when I make burgers I get some 80/20 and some pork and ask for it rough ground. If a cut is on sale, I'll buy a pound, cube it then grind at home.

I find Costo beef is tougher consistancy than a comparable cut from my local small grocer . rib steak or sirloin for example. |

Just about every grocery chain here in Mississauga sells AA beef. Costco sells AAA. I find Costco steaks to be steakhouse quality and always the freshest in town. |

I have good luck also...Not all people live near a good butcher tho. This is a web page from ours. »www.petes.ca/meet-your-meet We do try to buy from the farmer direct From above link "Oultons Meats produces, processes and direct markets beef, turkey and other poultry at their on-site store under the Martock Glen Farms brand. They also manage 40 acres of apple orchard and a 600-acre woodlot. Along with typical farm fare, Oultons also raise 15 varieties of exotic animals such as elk, venison, emu and wild boar." They have a shop at the farm and it is inspected. |

First I wouldn't want to freeze 4kg of ground beef, it would be the proverbial block of ice, and take days to defrost in the fridge. |

The amount of volume they have, I certainly hope so. |

Buying 4kg of beef all at once doesn't mean you have to freeze it as one big block. I take quantities like that and split it into 2 meal portions and then freeze it. They thaw quickly and I can thaw as many as I need for whatever I'm making. -- All of us get lost in the darkness, dreamers learn to steer by the stars All of us do time in the gutter, dreamers turn to look at the cars - Peart / Lifeson / Lee Join Team Helix |
