[WIN7] Win 7 SP1 Update fails

Okay I suspect many of you guys are going to wonder what I'm talking about because you probably installed SP1 long ago.

Unfortunately, I've got a Lenovo G560 laptop which seems to have a video adapter driver that, for some esoteric reason, prevents a person from even seeing the SP1 update, never mind downloading it and installing it.

This has been a notorious screw-up on Lenovo's part but they have refused to either provide an update or even go so far as to tell people how they could get it or provide a work-around. Recently, however, some intrepid people have found one and I've now got updated video drivers installed (10 Feb 2012 date), can see the SP1 download, can actually download it (maybe, maybe not), but installation fails. Anybody got any suggestions, guidance, whatever, on how to solve this problem?

Have you tried installing the independent download package rather than installing it via Windows Updates?

You can burn this ISO here that has the update for both x64 and 32-bit - »www.microsoft.com/en-us/download···?id=5842

Thanks. Be back later. Seems there is a 'disturbance in the force' on Capitol Hill right now and I'm watching that.

Okay, while waiting for some REAL news, I'm gratified to see that page apparently works without referring one to Windows Update.

Now, which one of the dozen or so downloads available there is what I'm looking for. Don't see any information that allows one to knowledgeably pick.

I'm running Win 7 Home Premium, dual core I think. If that helps.

Well there's three files that might be suitable for you but primarily it's basically two of them that you'll need.

Your Windows is either x64 (64-bit) or 32-bit. You can determine which one you have in system properties (right click Computer in your Start Menu and left click properties in the menu and look on that screen).

If you have x64:
windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe

If you have 32-bit:
windows6.1-KB976932-X86.exe

This is gonna work a lot better if I quit getting distracted by the news (nothing happening folks, forget it) and remember to download and install the SP1 package on the right machine!

Okay, followed the link to resolve the problem where I was told to install the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB947821). Followed the instructions there and ended up with
"Installer encountered an error: 0x80240009"
And that's where I stand right now.

Moving on, next thing MS recommended was to run SmartPCFixer. Well, that was sort of bad, too. It showed:
312 Registry problems (there had been 40 before attempting to install SP1)
3948 Evidence Files (??? no idea to what this refers)
21 Junk files (about 10 before SP1 failed install)
10 Shortcut files
2 file associations

Following the instructions, I selected "Fix All" (and now I get to find out whether I just totally hosed the box )

OH, heck, let me run it again confirm it says everything is now fixed before I reboot. Okay, looks like we're good to go -- rebooting now.

Are you sure? That reference came up on a webpage I received from the Microsoft installer when the SP1 install failed. Also, there was nothing to indicate any problem with the website from either McAfee or Netcraft.

... you said "SmartPCFixer" which is not a Microsoft solution.

"Microsoft Fix it" is the Microsoft solution.

1 edit

Fix It tells me nothing. I don't know if it succeeds or fails. I don't know if that's the way it's supposed to work, but the first time I ran it I wasn't even sure that it had done anything at all.

I've used it previously with another problem and I noticed this anomaly then.

At any rate, I've now run it again and will simply assume that it succeeded.

Think I'll wait until tomorrow morning and try once again to install the download for SP1. I'm getting a bit frazzled at the moment.
