4 edits | Awkward Routing To New York Servers?CT->Illinois I'm in CT and I noticed today that my latency to NY is really high for the small distance(About 55-80ms). I did a couple tracerts and I assume that it's saying that I'm being routed all the way to Illinois first. Is it?
(Ignore the wild latency; my Linksys doesn't like tracerts)

Thanks for your post. I wonder if it's just local then. Before today, I would route to NY after MA.
Here's another Tracert to Maine(Which shows the messed up routing a little better).

BGP "publishes" routes to others, If they know the front door is going to be busy, it says "deliveries to the rear, following path X If you don't follow path X you may be ignored, or more likely charged more for using the front door. since virtually all residential rates are base on the cheapest route available, they follow the directions is published. It's not a whole lot different then the airline hub and spoke system where if "your company's " airline doesn't have a direct flight from Seattle to Philly you may instead go Seattle to Dallas to Atlanta to Newark to Philly for $0.01 in savings.... not as direct, probably not as fast, but fine by the bean counters. |

OT but there is another tool there that shows the routes and advertisments history/changing (on a polar-like chart?) Sometime it changes for 30 seconds, sometime for days, and sometimes on a schedule. if the end points are big with lots of possible paths it's not a problem, small provider depend on a chain of connection the users will suffer. |

I am less concerned about the internals on poor pings, that's Comcast's problem. And they are far better equipped to resolve the issue than I. |

tshirtPremium,MVM join:2004-07-11 Snohomish, WA kudos:4 | no, it's just interesting to see the shift between one route and another. and these are shifts in the outside routes, pretty sure Comcast won't be publicizing their internal network |

Normally my traffic goes through Woburn, MA to Boston, then onto NYC. Now everything is being routed through Chicago. The above trace is to a place in Boston -- it's actually going out to Chicago to leave Comcast's network. (All of my traffic, even that bound locally, usually goes through NYC... But latency to Chicago and back is much worse.)
I'm also seeing downloads peaking around 2 Mbps, on a Blast! connection -- except to the local speedtest.comcast.net site, which gets me around full rated speed. Wonder if this wonky routing is also inducing some congestion or something? |

It's an experimental widget, similar to BGPlay »stat.ripe.net/widget/bgplay#w.resource=7922 but allows you more control, not finding it right now, they keep adding and removing them to work on them |

When I tried to run it in Firefox, Dr. Watson paid me a visit.
Though, lately I am forming the opinion that Firefox is not the bastion of stability that it once used to be. It's a shame that google's browser has so many issues........ |

Yeah, in CT we go from Hartford, to Woburn, then to NY first too. We're going to Illinois instead of New York.
- Still happening on Friday morning
Yeah, that's what I was thinking. I wonder if this is causing a lot of congestion around Chicago. |

BGPlay itself should work on any STABLE browser, but like a lot of RIPE stuff server is SLOW and is SLOW to resolve. but a pretty cool tool once you learn it's tricks. |

That's probably why I had trouble with it on FireFox. Since FF went over to their rapid version release process, I have seen the stability of the browser drop significantly. |
