 | [Networking] Extending my network with a 2nd FiOS MoCA router Hi all,
I have read through the FAQ and some posts and I think I understand what I can do, but I wanted to summarize here for a sanity check.
I live in a two story house and have FiOS for phone/internet (no TV.) The FiOS is delivered through coax to a ~5 year old Westell 9100 in a closet on the first floor, where it feeds various things (DTV, Xbox, Apple TV, Sonos, etc.) I have wifi disabled on the Westell; it only handles DHCP. My wifi is provided through an Airport Extreme. And this is where the problem lies.
I get horrible wifi up on the second floor. I've moved the AE around as much as I could to no avail. I have tried extending the network with some Airport Expresses...no good. I have tried Powerline adapters (which then feed an Express)...no dice. I just can't get a good consistent strong signal upstairs. Running an ethernet cable is just not an option right now. I was considering trying a "powerful" new router like an Asus, but before I do that...
It seems possible to use a second FiOS router that I would connect upstairs through an active coax connection. I would assign an IP address to it and disable DCHP on this router. And the internet connection would be provided to this router via MoCA through the coax? And then from there I could either enable wifi on this second router or add an additional wifi router via a LAN port to provide wireless upstairs?
I have a control panel in a closet upstairs where all the wiring comes in from the satellite (I have DirecTV for TV) and from the ONT and my POTS. This then feeds all the coax ports in the house. I need to see how this is configured. I know the satellite signal/cable is split ~4 ways to various coax connections. I imagine the FiOS connection just goes to the one coax in my downstairs closet. How do I split this connection to feed another coax? Just use a splitter?
If this is true and doable, then do I just order a new FiOS router through Verizon (or find one on eBay)? If I order through Verizon can I keep my original one?
How would throughput/speed be on the second router (for wired connections)? Comparable to the original router? I assume better than Powerline?
Sorry for all the questions. Thanks for your time and I look forward to your responses! |

Are you sure you read these instructions? »Verizon Online FiOS FAQ »Can I get an ethernet connection in a room with only coax?

said by bjcleaver:How do I split this connection to feed another coax? You can't mix the FIOS and satellite connections. You're going to need a dedicated coax run from the downstairs closet to the upstairs closet. You should already have a splitter in the downstairs closet splitting the coax from the ONT to your router and TV. If this is a 1x2 splitter, you will need to expand it so you can connect the coax run to the upstairs closet. If you're going to put the second Actiontec in the upstairs closet, you're done. Otherwise, you can use a barrel connector to connect the coax from downstairs to the coax run to where you want the second Actiontec.

said by bjcleaver:How would throughput/speed be on the second router (for wired connections)? You'll get 100Mbps throughput.
said by bjcleaver:Comparable to the original router? You don't say what revision your first Actiontec is, so can;t answer this.
said by bjcleaver:I assume better than Powerline? Some of the newer powerline modules claim faster speeds, but are not as reliable as MOCA. -- There are 10 kinds of people in the world; those who understand binary and those who don't.

I did read the FAQ. I think what I was asking was about the connection - I connect the second router via coax, not ethernet. So it sounds like yes, I connect it via coax, but I have to disable the WAN port. Thanks!

I only have FiOS internet, not TV so I don't think there is a splitter where the ONT comes into the house, but I need to check. If there isn't one, are you saying I could add a 1x2 splitter and then one line goes down to the first router and then the other goes to the second? |

1 edit | Will an Actiontec Wireless Broadband Router MI424WR Rev. G for $35 on eBay play nicely with FiOS? (It's not a Verizon-branded unit)
(Maybe I should make the Actiontek my primary with the gigabit ethernet and ny existing Westell 9100 my secondary...) |

 1 edit | May have issues as a primary because it's a non-Verizon? Or because it's Rev G? |

 | Got it, thanks. I'll probably try to pick up a Verizon model in that case. |
