What is the speed limit?

Hi everyone--

I have been enjoying cable speeds of 30/5 the last few months. It has been working flawless on my iMac, using an 10/100 ethernet cable to plug into my Linksys E3000 router. Wired because until I bought this iMac, no computer I had had a built in wireless option. I just stayed wired for no particular reason.

However, I recently had a speed jump to 50/5. Again, works perfectly. BUT!!! I decided to try using the wireless on my iMac. Once I did that, my speeds would not go over 30 down. But when I went back to wired, I again got the full 50 down speed.

This router is using Tomato firmware. I am also NOT using wireless N, (radio disabled) but G only because I have a bunch of stuff that don't recognize the N protocol.

So my question is, is wireless G unable to go over 30 down?

Is N as fast or faster then a 10/100 wired network?

30 is about what you get with G. N can handle 50.

30 is excellent for G. N (on the 2.4 band) is backwards compatible with G, so set your AP to N mode (not N-only mode) and get the best possible speed on all your devices.

Once you get rid of or upgrade your G devices you can switch to N-only mode for better consistency.

Totally depends. Under most circumstances a 100 Mbit full duplex network will beat N, however a highly tuned N network with the right equipment could come close.

Thank you. I will set that up.
I appreciate the responses.
