Adobe Says Attack Exposed Customer Financial Info

»abcnews.go.com/Technology/wireSt···20464022

Adobe Systems Inc. said a cyberattack on its systems has exposed credit-card information of 2.9 million customers.
The maker of Photoshop and other software said Thursday that the attacker accessed Adobe customer IDs and passwords on its systems. Through that, they were able to remove customer names, encrypted credit and debit card numbers, expiration dates and other information related to orders from customers worldwide. The company does not believe attackers removed credit and debit card numbers that weren't encrypted.

Important Customer Security Alert
To view this message in a language other than English, please click here.

We recently discovered that attackers illegally entered our network. The attackers may have obtained access to your Adobe ID and encrypted password. We currently have no indication that there has been unauthorized activity on your account. If you have placed an order with us, information such as your name, encrypted payment card number, and card expiration date also may have been accessed. We do not believe any decrypted card numbers were removed from our systems.

To prevent unauthorized access to your account, we have reset your password. Please visit www.adobe.com/go/passwordreset to create a new password. We recommend that you also change your password on any website where you use the same user ID or password. As always, please be cautious when responding to any email seeking your personal information.

We also recommend that you monitor your account for incidents of fraud and identity theft, including regularly reviewing your account statements and monitoring credit reports. If you discover any suspicious or unusual activity on your account or suspect identity theft or fraud, you should report it immediately to your bank. You will be receiving a letter from us shortly that provides more information on this matter.

We deeply regret any inconvenience this may cause you. We value the trust of our customers and we will work aggressively to prevent these types of events from occurring in the future. If you have questions, you can learn more by visiting our Customer Alert page, which you will find here.

Great.. so now I'm supposed to pay for credit monitoring in order to get the access to regularly/repeatedly check my credit reports for suspicious activity.

Christ on a cross it's been how many decades since networking has started and people still haven't been able to figure out how to secure sensitive material?

No, that letter coming to you will tell you that Adobe is paying for credit monitoring for all affected customers for one year. It is not an unusual move on their part. I woud have been surprised if they were not offering free credit monitoring as that is standard for companies who have had their customers credit card data stolen.

"Adobe also said it would give affected customers the option of enrolling in a one-year complimentary credit monitoring membership."

I'd like to see them get hit with a class action lawsuit over that. While it's become the standard response, one year of credit monitoring doesn't undo the damage caused by negligence and even arrogance for unlucky users. If companies are going to be this stupid, they need to do better or face the same pain as the people who trusted them.
