[Rant] Flash requires cookies to save volume settings

Recently there has been a change to the way Flash plays back videos. If you block flash cookies the player will default to no sound and you will have to manually move the volume control up each time you play a video. You must accept a flash cookie from s.ytimg.com in order to maintain the volume level you selected or else it will always revert to silence each time you open a new video.

Has anyone else noticed this? It seems to be a fairly recent change.

Yes! i was waiting to see if anyone was going to bring it up, but on multiple operating systems I've noticed this. If you kill the flash settings/history, and cookies the volume is muted by default now. At least on Youtube.

You have to actually clear your flash cookies, if you don't do that you won't see it. /sigh

I've found a workaround for this. I let Flash store cookies and then I run CCleaner and tell it not to delete the s.ytimg.com flash cookie, but have it delete all the others. Not ideal, but it works.

I clear them in my browser so they are cleared on opening, and exit. it's not a big deal, just a minor annoyance. It's either a bug, or done to annoy those who throw off their marketing tracking.

Actually, after looking at all my browser settings, and flash settings, I dont see where I have anything blocked.

So, what is the trick to get the volume back to normal?

Thanks

CCleaner setting to preserve one flash cookie

First you must allow Flash to store cookies, then set CCleaner to save the one cookie and delete the rest.

Really interesting! I use Linux only and have had Flash cookies blocked from writing to my system since day one. I use YouTube every day and have never noticed any audio problems. Are you all on Windows?

Blocked? Block them, and every loading of a youtube video is muted by default. I just clear them when opening, and closing the browser.

I've saw the problem on linux first actually, it doesn't matter what os you're running it's a website, it's flash.

Why does this matter? Can't you unmute it each time?

I prefer that nothing happens automatically in regards to Flash. But then if it is available only in Flash and not in HTML5 then it would be rare that I would watch it.

That's interesting and not good. Fx is my default browser and I use SeaMonkey a fair amount also but I don't use either if I need Flash so I wouldn't know about this problem. I use IE10 if I need Flash. If Flash is enabled in Fx or SeaMonkey then youtube will not use HTML5, if available, so I keep it disabled in Fx and SM so that HTML5 will be default.
