Data Plan for the US

I'm not sure where to post this... and I have less than 3 days to figure this out, didn't think it would be a big issue.

I have a bell contract, and I need to go to the US to settle some matters for 2 weeks. I'll be 2 weeks with a 3 year old and a 4 month old with no internet, no telephone, no tv, and no toys.

I called bell to get a Data Plan so I could at least do some You Tube Clips or something on the computer when the son was going nuts... but the top plan for roaming they have is $100 for 100mb... which is just stupid.

Does anyone have any suggestions? There's no where to play really where we are going either. It's to close up the house my MiL lived in and the area is pretty sketchy and the parks are all "closed" this time of year due to being School Only property (It's a weird area I admit!)

Go to a Walmart when you get there and pick up a Straight Talk SIM Card. $45 prepaid service for a month, gets you unlimited talk text and data.

Another alternative, if you want things set up before you leave, is Roam Mobility: »www.roammobility.com/

For every country I visit, I always grab a SIM card in the host country as Canadian providers will nail you with so many fees it's not worth the convenience of using your regular plan.

What state?

I looked at Roam, but I idiotically thought Bell would have a decent plan (stupid) and left this to the last minute, so can't get the Roam Device fast enough. and I can't get my cell phone unlocked.

In that case, you're probably best off picking up a Straight Talk device at a Walmart store once you get to your destination, or ordering one now for in-store pick up at your destination. They seem to have quite a few of them: »www.walmart.com/search/search-ng···traint=0

Any specific reason why you can't get your own phone unlocked?

Get a T-Mobile sim and a 4G modem or use a unlocked phone. Not sure about coverage in your area.

Sounds like you are going into a strange area.

I can't figure out why parks would be closed.

Before getting any cellular service, DO check coverage maps....

T-Mobile has reallocated most of their 1900 spectrum to UMTS/HSPA and now use AWS for LTE. You don't even need an AWS phone anymore, just unlock the Bell phone and go.

Up until recently Bell offered this feature that was relatively hidden but they could add it over the phone for you : Smart email&Int 1GB North Amer $45/mo - it gave you an additional 1GB of data on your phone, and it was all N/A - so US usage would count toward that 1GB, and any CDN usage over your base allocation would also then go against that 1GB.... I have a feeling they may have done away with it in September when they changed all of their plans.

Simple Mobile is my choice for a data SIM in the US.

If you're not worrying about calling much, and you're all about data the $40 plan gets you a month with all the texting, 1GB of high speed data (and then low speed data once you use that up). $50 gets you 3GB high speed. If you'll be calling back to Canada a lot $50 gets you unlimited international calling and 1GB data.

Bell is charging $100 for a 100mb? Did I read that right? Call back. The rep must have been woefullly uninformed

Telus has a $65 plan that includes unlimited text, 300mb and 300 minutes.

Not all T-mobile markets have 1900 HSPA, and the ones that do have pretty spotty coverage outside the main urban centre.

That's a new plan. It was $100 for 100 mb and 100 minutes in the US back in May.

Aside from the fact that I have done exactly what I described above and had no major issues and that urban areas are probably all that 99% of the Canadians who go to the US would ever care about, the fact that many of T-Mobile's new phones don't even do UMTS on AWS sort of speaks for itself.
