I received the speed upgrade email. I currently have my rock solid SB5100 with firmware SB5100-2.3.8.0-GA-00-NOSH Hardware Version: 1 MIB Version: II GUI Version: 1.0 VxWorks Version: 5.4

I'm guessing I need to upgrade in order to see the advertised 100Mbps is San Diego. What should I be looking for in a new cable modem? Can I go to the Cox store and expect to get a good cable modem?

They are both good modems. Just what ever you do, stay away from the gateways. They should have several to choose from at the Cox Store, so yea, I think thats a good place to start.
