pensionerPremium join:2005-02-20 Clarksville, TN | [XPPro] new program icons install off screen several months ago had my machine rebuilt with a new MB and since then any time I install a new program or send any shortcut to the desktop, they are placed to the right of my 1024X768 desktop visibility. Then I have to go to desktop properties, change the graphic settings to 1280 X something, click into it, quickly find the icon, drag it to the middle of the desktop, and then get out of that setting before it becomes permanent. Is there a simpler way of getting the icons to load within the desktop to start with, or a better way of moving them into view. thanks |

1 edit | It sounds like who ever worked on it might have had 2 screens running and the settings are still set for dual screen.
Can you right click the area off screen and select move to reduce the area?
Also can you post a screen shot of the properties - right click a space on the desktop and select properties.
Have you tried un-installing drivers for the graphics and loading a fresh install? Goto Control Panel|System|Deice Manager What does it say for display, nvidia or ati/amd? -- The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing - Edmund Burke

And as you can see, the display adapter part of the Intel Q35 chip. Just learned something though from going back and forth into the larger area trying to find and get the move function - it didn't screw up my icon placement from going back and forth. That way I can have the time to get a new icon and drag it back without worrying that the larger screen would go permanent, no biggie if it does as I can resize and not screw up the icons. Guess I'll just live with the quirk without the uninstall and reinstall of the driver set. But thanks again for trying. |

Also, you didn't say if you are using a narrow or wide monitor. I prefer lower resolutions so that the desktop is easier to read. My laptop has a wide monitor and is set at 1366x768. |

Okay, what I think is happening is you are reducing the window resolution for the monitor so you can see better. This isn't your best option.
•Slide the bar back up to say 2/3 along that bar, it will set the screen resolution smaller but more enhanced for the monitor's needs .
•Then use the settings in this next link for DPI. Be gentle though, you don't want to use the highest setting, rather the middle. »www.microsoft.com/resources/docu···nts.mspx
•Then utilize this link and subject matter to make your icons bigger. »www.wikihow.com/Use-Large-Icons-···ndows-XP
That should allow correct resolution for the monitor but also create bigger images to work with for your visual needs. You may want to play a little with the settings but resolution is best left at native (recommended) or only 1 or 2 bars to the left.

Mr Bill and Mr norwegian , we have success ! first tried and played with norwegian's suggestions of slliders and DPI's, took a while of playing and rearranging all the icons several times to get things both set up and visually right ( I have vision problems and awaiting cataract surgeries in Nov ), then saw bill's suggestions: more play time. Upgraded from generic monitor to the real driver for my 19 in LG monitor, then brought down a update to the Q35 chip - again rearranged my 83 desktop icons back to 'my way of doing things' - also got rid of a bunch. Whatever - but now upon testing, newly created icons get placed on the visible desktop. Thank you both for your efforts. Harris in Clarksville TN |
