[Equipment] Recommend specific modem for RCN

I'm an RCN customer in NYC (50M service). I'd like to buy a cable modem to use as backup for the one I have. My current modem is a Cisco DPC3008. Is there any reason I should prefer to get a DPC3010? Also, am I safe just to order one of these, or do I need to watch out for specific "flavors" of a given model (e.g. it's a DPC3008-x)

One more question: when I get it, I'd like to set up to make sure it's ok. I assume I'll have to call RCN to register the MAC. Will this then invalidate the MAC of my current modem, or will they both work on RCN?

RCN Charges so little for modem rental hardly worth buying your own as backup. Only your registered Mac will work so if you swap it the old one will get disabled. No way to have service on 2 devices withou paying for 2 services.

Do you have a business if your current modem fails can't wait until you go to the store and purchase a replacement?

It's not for a business specifically, but without it my kids often can't do their homework, and I can't login to work remotely. So I do feel I need something like a business continuity plan.

I don't have a problem with the time it takes to go to the store, but I'd really like to know in advance that what I get will work. I'm concerned that not just any DOCSIS 3.0 modem will work, and that I'll end up on the phone with RCN telling me that they don't support model DCP3010x, or that I need to flash new firmware (which I can't download).

I agree with another post that RCN doesn't charge a lot for it so that's not the concern. But the last time I had this issue, I called it in on a Thursday and they couldn't do a service call until Tuesday - that is a long outage for me.

A motorola sb6141 can be had for $80+tax at most costco's. After tax it's about the same price as amazon (without tax). Pick your poison.
