Dumb question, the $500 AP does AP PMP PTP modes, but you don't need the $500 radio for SMs to still utilize GPS do you?

If that is the case with proper product supply. Goodbye UBNT

Why? You can get by in almost all cases without GPS on 5.4/5.8, this has been demonstrated. The SU is on par with a NanoStation's 16 dBi antenna...not near the NanoBridge's 22 and 25 dBi gains.

As I posted in the UBNT forum,
quote:
1 - If they really wanted a disruptive product, they would have made it legacy compatible. As it is now, the product is restricted to green field deployments only. Worthless to an established WISP with legacy or UBNT airMax products running in legacy mode.

2 - GPS..Who needs it. Oh, *they* do for 13 mile range.

3 - Marketing alert spoiler! The dreamy eyed marketing suits with overly aspirational ideas got into the mix. I don't care whos radio, what modulation...You can't deliver any fast speed at 13 miles. It's a matter of signal level and signal level is a matter of RF propagation.

4 - No reflector. What you have is a NanoStation..

It's all based on the Atheros AR9344 SOC. 5.4GHz DFS is in the approval stages with the FCC. 2.4GHz will be available first quarter 2014. Supposedly there will be a 900MHz version. They claim to have figured out how to do GPS sync, solved the latency issues, and high client load degraded throughput issues that have plagued many UBNT operators. I don't know about 3.65 on the ePMP line, but based on Cambium release statements their 450 series will support 3.65 sometime next year IIRC. The 450 series is also abandoning FSK compatibility mode due to engineering difficulties. Supposedly, Cambium went from the drawing board to production on the ePMP series in a mere 18 months, which is pretty incredible IMHO.

CTI can't be bothered it seems. Winncom had a webinar with Cambium. Maybe talk to them.

I like the thought of ACTUAL frequency reuse. 5Mhz guard band according to Cambium instead of 20Mhz. So you can get away with 2 sectors using 45Mhz of spectrum instead of 60Mhz.

From a pure numbers perspective it still costs more for the equipment (except for the antennas). According to Cambium, reflectors are on their way from third parties, so that removes the Nanostation aspect. You can use these in PtP modes, all of them. Which is a huge change for Cambium. Working GPS (cough, SYNC), according to Cambium with the different MAC layer it's more efficient so higher throughput.

I like what I heard, and plan to try them out.

If it works, it will be great. Not just for the WISP side of business, we do PtP and PtMP for video/private deployments and there are occasions where we need (available) cost-effective solutions.

There are probably reasons why UBNT ended up with those they do have. Not to be rude. But an interesting thought just the same. Maybe they could figure out GPS and some other things if they got more of them LOL
