Hello All,
Thanks in advance for any advice.
Following the guidelines, here's my info: Cable Modem: SB5101U Tier: Cox High Speed Internet Preferred Signal Level: Varies (see below) No splitters I do have the modem connected to a router, but I removed the router from the loop for a day and still have the same problems.
So around two weeks ago I started having issues with dropped connections. The previous two years I've had no issues at all. The problem initially began during a storm, though I'm not sure that's related. Some days the connection is relatively smooth, some days it is awful, regardless of the weather. While initially I was only having problems with dropped connections, now I'm having dropped connections and severely reduced speed. After I first reported the problem to Cox, I was told to replace my modem with one that is DOCSIS 3 compliant.
I guess my question is: Is there any reason that a DOCSIS 3 modem would help if the problem is related to the building's network getting over-crowded? Would 3 help me with stability or throughput in this situation? If I must replace the modem, that's fine. I just don't want to drop $80 on a new one only to have the same problems.
Based on information I've read here, I started checking my modem's status page and logs. It seems like at least one of the upstream channels is fine, while the others are trashed (see images). Cox sent some techs out who said the signal levels were fine, but that there were some unusual signal readings in channels that aren't typically used by HSI (I'm paraphrasing here as I can't remember exactly what he said). He also rewired the wall outlet. They are coming out again next week to test the connection at the apartment building's entry point, and if they see the same issues there they were going to have someone look at the tap for the neighborhood.

It almost looks like someone split off your line. Is that possible? My guess is a mistake or problem in the wiring closet in your apartment building. |

I think what you've mentioned is a possibility. The building management told me that there was someone else in the building reporting a similar problem, but they are on a completely different floor.
On the other hand, I'm also beginning to wonder if my cable modem is dying. I tried replacing the coax cable and power cycling my modem, and this completely killed my connection. Now I've discovered that if the connector to the wall is too tight or too loose I have no connection at all. A quarter-twist makes all the difference, apparently. It feels kind of like having to jiggle a cord to get a better picture on a TV. Is it possible the tuner in my modem is fried (if it even has one)?
Also I edited my first post to put in into the [LA] group. So my original post is gone for the moment while it gets re-approved. Sorry about that. |

That being said the wide swings in transmit power you're seeing are likely the modem losing connection with us. It could be a modem issue or some sort of intermittent upstream interference issue. |

Thanks for the help, guys. |

Re: [LA] Having some connection issues recently in NOLA Well I didn't have anything else to do so I hooked up a new docsis 3 modem and had it provisioned just to see what would happen. While I'm not an expert at reading diagnostic pages, it looks like there are definitely some wires crossed somewhere. Hopefully the techs can figure it out on Monday. It seems odd that the problems would pop up seemingly out of nowhere on a Saturday night (two weeks ago), but maybe someone new moved in and just started using their internet for the first time. Thanks again for your suggestions. |
