[F@H] My GPU unpaused itself - what to do?

Click for full size
downloadLog.txt 11,873 bytes
Everything's been fine since this thread: »[F@H] How to configure so CPU uses all 4 cores? but today when I rebooted after applying Patch Tuesday fixes and went to re-start folding, found the GPU started. Now I have a work unit "Ready" and don't know what to do. I paused it manually for now. Attached screen snapshot from about an hour ago that shows the client is still set to permanently start paused but I don't think that's what happened. Points per day displayed are just over half the usual. Also attached a copy of my log from a minute or two ago in case it's useful.

May not get back here until later or tomorrow but sure would appreciate advice.

Edit: Folding Power is back up to Full...don't know how that got changed.

Edit again: Wonder if I might've started the GPU rather than the CPU by mistake, causing it to download a work unit. Think I need to get rid of the GPU's "Ready" work unit somehow before trying another reboot.

Attached is another log copied after Folding Power was returned to normal. Points per day displayed increased to over 9,000 which is closer to usual.

Your log shows that both slots were initially enabled in the paused state and that they were both unpaused at the exact same time about 2 minutes later. I wonder if your mouse pointer spanned both slots when you unpaused the cpu slot.

I would do just what you suggest and get rid of the gpu unit, however, I don't know how to properly dump a unit.

I wouldn't worry about a reboot as both slots should still be paused.

Thank you. So...I'll leave it as it is until someone tells me how to properly dump that work unit.

I found some instructions here: »foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?f···#p215541

Please, does anyone know how to go to "start," as in the following: "... Goto start->FAHClient->Data Directory->work ..."?

What version of windows are you using? How to find files varies ....

On my XP machine, I can easily find the data directory, since it actually has a 'start' button that takes me where I want to go.

Windows 7. While pouring a cup of coffee I remembered that my XP had "Start" but don't see anything like that here. Also the small "Run" field must've been moved. Apparently haven't had reason to use those since getting this machine.

Edit: I found "Run," but don't think that's what's needed.

Looking at F@H client, I don't see a Data Directory. Those instructions must not be appropriate for this computer.

I have F@H running on a Windows 8 machine and an XP machine ... maybe somebody running it on Windows 7 will come along with instructions on how to find the data directory for you ...

I have had to rid of a few bad WU's this year because computer problems here and the only way I found to do so was to uninstall and install. I have downloaded new copy's of FAH also when doing so. The latest copy I have is 7.3.6x86.

I have Win7-64 HP and there was no FAH or anything similar in the start folder. I put a shortcut in it by going to the exe file and pinning it. I have mine set to start as a service as I can not fold on my GPU. This may make a difference.

I did a search for "Data Directory", Data, and Directory and could not find any such file.

Thank you so much for looking around. We're running the same version of F@H. Guess I should plan on an uninstall/install at some point when I've set it to stop after finishing a work unit.

I followed the path in the log's Configuration (in lower right area of screen snapshot). Does anyone think deleting the "00" folder under "work" (on the left near the bottom) could get rid of that GPU work unit without causing other problems?

(laughing) So it seems like a reasonable idea to you, pending additional input?

The folder's contents haven't been modified since this problem began.

I don't have a GPU. 00 is my CPU.

Correction: 0 is my CPU.

I was operating from flawed memory because I tried to look in order to try to help you, opened FAHControl and it locked up.

I think I did, too. Can you think of anything I should do before deleting it other than shutting F@H down?

If you want to be extra safe, I guess you could set the cpu unit to finish and when it is done then shutdown fah and then delete.

Thank you. Think I'll settle for safe without the "extra" since you don't sound like you think it's really necessary to wait for the cpu unit to finish and I want this to be over. Fingers crossed.

If you don't want the GPU to fold ... FAHControl > Configuraton > Slots tab

Highlight the GPU and click the Remove button?

Is there any reason for the question mark to concern me or should I go for it?

It would be nice if the GPU wouldn't try folding again in the future.

Edit: You're our moderator and wouldn't have suggested it as a joke so will do it.

It's what I would do if I didn't want the GPU to fold. The question mark was because I was telling you how to get to that tab in the version I have installed right now (7.3.6), which could be different if you have a different fahcontrol.

I also don't know how adventurous you are taking suggestions from someone who has never even seen a GPU. I may be a bit more adventurous, wouldn't be bothered with having to uninstall/reinstall if I messed up.

Me, too, now I know it's okay. Got in lots of trouble removing things (like a firewall) just because it was possible in my early years on line (2000-2003) and I didn't understand them. My most recent experiment with the F@H client deleted the local online address from the left side of the display and squirt was kind enough to bail me out.

... suggestions from someone who has never even seen a GPU. ...

I've never seen a GPU either but know you're familiar with the client. And yes, we're using the same version.

It was "our moderator" I commented on; not all moderators. Thank you very much for telling me how to get the whole GPU thing out of the way.

Things are different for me...

I noticed earlier this year that the program does not install the same way in all cases here is where my work folder is located.

Thanks for the help all. Now I will not have to uninstall to rid of a bad WU.
