[FireFox] Turn off Private Browsing completely?I would never use Private Browsing and I want to turn it off completely. How do I do that?
I was typing an IM reply and hit some key that flipped me to a blank screen that said Private browsing was on....I couldn't go back....so I lost the text I had typed for the IM as I had to restart Fx and Fx 17.0.9 ESR does not remember text in a text box if it crashes or needs to be restarted. I see that Sea Monkey 2.21 remembers text but it is unstable at this site so I need to use Fx and I'd like to totally turn off Private Browsing so that I can't accidentally hit some key or key combination that suddenly turns it on. |

In the newer versions of Firefox a separate new window appears when you start a private browsing session. This window is slightly offset from your old window. On Firefox and PaleMoon the key combination to start a new Private Window is Ctrl+Shift+P. A quick search shows that there is an add-ons that may help. Please read the description carefully before you install this add-on. » addons.mozilla.org/En-us ··· rowsing/This seems more complicated. » support.mozilla.org/en-U ··· s/959890P.S. If you're writing something important and lengthy you should copy the text regularly. I like to paste my posts, quotes, notes and links to an open notepad window. |

That extension seems to do what I needed. Thanks. I did not get the popup like the screenshot shows. I evidently hit the keyboard combination to start private browsing while I was typing but I didn't get the popup. Once I looked at the extension you linked to and it told me what the keyboard combo was to start private browsing, I tried those keys and got the popup. When private browsing suddenly started, I think the window was slightly offset from the old window now that I think about it, but when I tried to close it that shut Fx completely down. It didn't give me back my tabs like the popup says it will. So, I installed the extension and tried the keyboard combo and nothing happens. The extension seems to do what I wanted. As for losing the text in the IM box here, I don't understand why Fx stopped saving the text. On my XP Pro computer, an old version of Fx saves the text and it is there when I restart Fx with the tabs from the previous session. But on Windows 8 computer and Fx 17.0.9 ESR text is never saved. I HATE that and I don't understand why Fx would remove this ability! I recently upgraded SeaMonkey from 2.20 to 2.21 on Windows 8 and it now saves the text. Surely, Fx 24 ESR, when I upgrade to that version, will also save the text. One of the reasons I came back to Fx, sometime ago, as my default browser was that Opera 10x and on (on any OS) would not save text in a text box and Fx always has done that until Windows 8. I suppose Fx is not fully compatible with Windows 8. SeaMonkey only began saving text on Windows 8 with 2.21. I suppose my profile could be slightly corrupt but Fx 10 ESR that I had on Windows 8 when I first got a new Windows 8 computer also would not save the text and that was a brand new install of Fx so I think Fx (at least through 17.0.9 ESR) just isn't fully compatible with Windows 8 and SeaMonkey just now became fully compatible with the latest version. |

Would saving text have to do with the "remember search and form history feature"? » support.mozilla.org/en-U ··· r=1&as=sHere is an article about another add-on that may interest you. » howto.cnet.com/8301-1131 ··· ment_=#!Add-on page. » addons.mozilla.org/en-US ··· a-cache/ |

Wow. I don't get it. I thought it was just Fx 17 ESR and Fx 10 ESR earlier on Windows 8 with the problem but from the article, and then reading in Addons the comments on the extension, this is a widespread problem in Fx! That stuns me. Why would such a great feature be removed from Fx? Why should we need an extension to do what Fx used to always do? SeaMonkey has always been slower on features but even it now saves the text in large text boxes (with no need for an extension to do it). I can't understand why Fx doesn't. I guess I will install the extension. I don't like having many extensions but I have to get more and more as essential features are no longer in Fx and I don't even have the current version of Fx which is probably worse than the version I have as far as stripping out essential features. Anyhow, thanks for those links! |

There is a way to do it and at least remove the context button without a add-on. GlennAllen would know.
Maybe he'll stop by. |

For text recovery, check out Lazarus ( » addons.mozilla.org/en-US ··· ecovery/ ) , as it offers password protection, is searchable, and has worked well, here (17.0.1), when needed. |

Thanks for the link. I noticed that extension but I chose Textarea Cache instead to try. It's better than nothing but not that great. I might try Lazarus and see if it is any better.
It is Session Manager that is at fault. It does not save text properly in ver 17. I've been using Session Manager ever since Piro broke up TBE into the little extensions it is currently and has been since Fx 4. Piro stopped doing session management back then and told us to use Session Manager which works great on Fx 4 and Fx 10 ESR to save text in text boxes. Because I have been using TBE since its inception almost (originally only on Mozilla Suite) I had totally forgotten that it is an extension and not the browser itself that saves the text since I've had it saved for so many years. |
