That's surprising. They had 2012 R2 beta in like, same day as release. Maybe it'll be there soon.

when can we expect to see 8.1 in windows updates? during their normal patch tuesday release?

To my knowledge 8.1 is a full reinstall. It won't be a SP like update.

to be up to date. it doesnt sound like the start button is going to bring back the old start menu, so i will keep using classic shell.

To be fair going from 2008 to 2008 R2 was a new install. Ditto for 2012->2012 R2. It's a new OS, not a service pack.

true, but i don't want to compare a server OS to a client OS.

Well, I'm afraid you're going to have too. Cause this is how it's gonna be going forward... We may see a 8.1 SP1 before 9 comes out.

Just took Microsoft a little longer to get the non-server OS in line with the server OS (which started this thing in, well, 2008).

2012/r2 is a steaming pile

I'll stick with 2008R2 when I can

2012 R2 just released today! How can you dispairage the mothership so soon?

All kidding aside, we heard from a hospital out east of here who was very happy with their 2008R2 hyper-v install. They upgraded to 2012. Long story short, they ripped out hyper-v and installed VMWare.

To make the story funny, we share a similar Microsoft rep. We didn't know at the time that we did and unknowingly gave him the bad news. He hadn't talked to them in awhile. Ooops.

i guess i wont be getting 8.1 then. not worth a re install to get a start button that doesnt do what it should do. as stated, i will continue to use classic shell.

side note- i didnt realize you could launch classic shell and change the appearance of the start menu, i just switched it from classic shell to w7. looks better.

thanks.

I have been running 8.1 on my laptop for a few weeks (TechNet). I would stay on Windows 7 if I didn't feel this is the future of Microsoft. Previously I installed 2012 on my laptop, that lasted a week and went back to Windows 7. I was hoping that 8.1 would change things but its mostly the same. Tried to get use to 8.1 Metro UI but after two days installed Classic Shell.

i just spoke to a friend who updated, he said he did not have to re-install.

he said he downloaded it and as soon as the download finished there was a 15 min reboot timer, but you could force the reboot and 10 minutes later it was done.

that sounds a little better than re-installing. i'd go for that.

Unfortunately the Try it version is still the old preview-release test version pushed/squeezed out in June.

If you think about it, it's a lot more like the Apple Mac way of doing things. They get plenty of people eager to shell out $X every 12-18 months....(I have no idea how much each release of OS X costs or exactly how often, but the point remains.)

based off of what my friend told me, i decided to update.

a reformat is not needed. it downloads and then auto installs.

8.1 will install over 8 without a full reinstall. The confusion on that stems from the fact that you can't (currently) slipstream 8.1 into original 8 media, the way you could with all previous service packs. MS wants you to do the 8 install followed by upgrade to 8.1, or use the 8.1 full media to do it all in one shot. (and I am not sure they have released the full install 8.1 media yet)

yeah, there had to be some confusion somewhere. i know MS isn't perfect (no company is), but there was no way they were going to force end users to to a clean install in order to get 8.1. 90% of end users probably wouldn't know how to start the process of downloading an iso, burining it to disk (or usb boot), etc...

Sweet! Good to know.

But it won't work like an SP install, correct?

sounds like it works the same as a service pack.

with a service pack, you download it, click next a few times, do a reboot and bam, everything is all done.

that is exactly what this update did.

Correct. It works just like a service pack, or any other update, except you can't slip stream it into your installation media. Has to be run after install.

Friend brought me a Win 8 laptop that wouldn't launch IE. Windows 8.1 upgrade took care of it.

1 recommendation

Friends don't let friends use IE. Or windows 8.

Start giving them too much direction and they come to you for everything.
