[HN9000] Wacky Modem ProblemThis is what my HN9000 (now a Gen4) modem is doing:

This has been with me for several months...normally 10AM until 2PM and the other odd thing: Only the power light remains on but it is RED, Not blue.
Tech support has been very helpful (right). I have hopes someone like grogreg might spot this and come up with an idea.
Thanks much, Tom wb6kvr |

Not on the 9000 myself, but take a peek at the manual ... any chance of a overheat going on with that LED red ? |

On-Red Modem temperature too hot
Thanks much Tom |

Well, They sent a Tech down from Missoula who replaced the 'radio' (what I would call transmitter/receiver) and it worked fine for a couple days.

So it probably was not the radio...poor tech said they would not allow him to replace Modem and radio both. He had to guess which was the most likely the problem.

Typical for Hughes. Give them a call (I know) they should be able to look at the modems logs and see something like that. Is your modem sitting upright and good space/ airflow around it ? |

Modem and power supply replaced a week ago. Heat not (apparently) a problem.

Time to close this one down. Problem is solved (after a fashion). The cause was/is the pump motor on a washing machine. The feed horn on the 'radio' looks on past the edge of the dish-directly to the washer location.
Two Hams in this home, over 60 years of hamming, it took this long to figure out a case of RFI.

Almost a word for word quote of the engineer at HughesNet! Those folks really went all out to solve this one. Friday's tech visit had a phone link to the east coast.
I was going to see if a faraday shield of some sort would help but today brought about 4 inches of snow.

That is a strange one. The RF must be entering through the LNB or the coax in the block downconverter frequencies, usually 950-1450 MHz from the LNB to the modem. I highly doubt it would be interference on the receive 22 GHz end. ... Do you have a receiver capable of tuning 950-1450 MHz? Would be interesting to hear what the RFI sounds like, or what the signature is.
Glad I happened onto this post. I've got a HN9000 SME installation scheduled here for next Thursday. Think I will insist on Quad Shield RG-6 after reading this, as sometimes there's thousands of watts being transmitted from my location. ... Your callsign sounds quite familiar. Wondering if we have talked on air in the past, perhaps on 75 Meters.

Due to the "odd nature" of this problem and your upcoming installation I wish to stress the importance of proper installation proper attention to grounding. Conversationally speaking, you need the Modem, its power supply, the TRIA and reflector all properly grounded together. Static buildup can lead to some odd performance issues. I suggest you read the following two links: » community.myhughesnet.co ··· servicesThis one while lengthy provides much info sprinkled through out: » community.myhughesnet.co ··· grounded |

Hi SOX,
I agree, your call seems familiar. Long ago I lived on 3820 when in the Los Angeles area and did quite a bit of 75 meter mobile.
No receiver in that band area, bummer
Same mount held Hughs 6000 and then 7000 with no problems. BUT the 9000 shifted satellite. i.e. the 9000 was pointed even more directly towards the washer.
I did check with my local power company but when the guy asked "what's RFI" I gave up any hope for help.

If you're talking about 10 years ago on 3820, with the crew of Art, Bob, Orv, others and HamCams, 'that' I remember very well. ... I also frequented 3977.7 and 3983 and we had a Lot of mobile checkins. Wayyy into the morning hours. ... I'm now involved mainly in Emergency Comms with the county and RACES/ARES, but occasionally tune the old frequencies and wonder where everyone disappeared to. Understand about the power company and their ignorance. I had to educate the power company here (and continue to do so) regarding the most elementary aspects of RFI. ... Sometimes they accidentally fix something without my help. Gwalk, as far as grounding, I've read most all of Greg's posts regarding grounding and learned a lot. ... This commercial system isn't being installed by any 'local' installer, but instead by an outfit called MultiCom out of Phoenix, specializing in commercial installations. This is going to be with a de-icer dish, so no more going out and sweeping snow out of the thing. ... Hope weather isn't a factor (it appears it may be for Thursday's scheduled install). ... Tomorrow will be in process of running power out to the pole for the dish de-icer (dish is Prodelin .98). |
