No, you do not need a dedicated sound card to feed cheap computer speakers. If you are looking for better sound, put the money into better speakers. They are your weakest link right now.

Is it working? You don't need a standalone card unless the current one isn't working.

So it depends on what exactly you are asking.

If you are asking about quality, then Camelot One is correct. You need much better speakers/headphones before you will even notice a difference in quality between audio chipsets.

Thanks everyone for your help. So i would need 5.1 or 7.1 set before i would notice a difference in sound quality.

You just need better QUALITY speakers (be they 2.1 or 5. 1 or whatever).

What you have currently would not be considered QUALITY speakers.

If your on-board one sounds fine to you then you don't need one.

I have one motherboard that the on-board sound is crap. I can hear static when I move my mouse.

So I dropped in an old Soundblaster card and it's fine.

If you follow the link in my sig line I provide two live scanner audio feeds. The fire/aid feed is using the "Realtek" on-board card and the police feed is using a Soundlaster Live PCI in the same computer. The Fire and Aid feed is noticeably nosier with more background hiss and it is not the scanner because I can switch the two and the hiss stays with the on-board sound.

Can you recommend good 2.1 speakers?

Looks good, going to keep these in mind for the kitchen media center, post-remodel.
