[Plumbing] Crud in hot water line in kitchen sink

Click for full size
My kitchen sink hot water quit working a while earlier - first it was very low pressure, and then no pressure at all.

After disassembling the faucet (see attachment, the black crud was below that 974-074 part) and pushing a coat hanger down the hot water hole to get rid of the crud, the crud came out when I repressurized the hot water supply (see other picture for the crud.) Note that I found particulates in the aerator/filter in the faucet as well.

1) What is this crud?
2) Is there the possibility of more?
3) Do I need to be worried?

Thanks!

Is it magnetic? If so, you have a steel fitting/pipe somewhere in the hot system, and this will reoccur if the fitting/pipe isnt changed.

If not magnetic, plan to clean it just as you did every year or so. You can remove the stem/cartridge, and turn on the hot water with a cup/etc over the hot side to deflect the water into the sink. This will blow debris out easier.

No, city water.

Not sure if it's plastic or what the material is. I'm copper pipe all the way to the sink valves. Even have copper to/from the water heater. The only part that is a steel fitting is the flexible tubing from the valve to the faucet; and I checked the gasket on that.. it's intact, and only about a year old.

It breaks apart really easily into very small pieces. More like crumbles if I had to describe it.

Sounds like rubber. However, this does not negate the fact that your toilet may have a cross with your sink.

How long since you flushed the water heater ? Also how old is the heater ?
Could be from the anode in the heater .
One test you could try is to see if the particles will dissolve in white vinegar .
If they dissolve , that will eliminate rubber or plastic .

We had something like that for a couple of days supposedly, but it lasted longer and the city put a filter at the start of the street. Apparently once a year when the fire hydrants are tested by the fire department, this crud can get it due to low water pressure. Just a thought but you might want to call the city and see if there has been any recent things going on.

Check your shutoff valve beneath the sink. The rubber washer on ours breaks down every few years and comes apart. It then plugs up the supply line. One of these days I am going to change it out for a ball cock valve.
