Re: Rumorville Warning - 12 tuner FiOS DVR in the pipeline?!It seems folks have lost touch with VZ reality.
If you've been a VZ customer for more than a few months I can't believe you'd even speculate this stuff. |

Won't a single hard drive have a heck of a time trying to keep up with 12 streams (HD?) recording simultaneously? Maybe it's more like they have been working to make two separate DVR's behave as one... You schedule or watch, and they transparently work together to determine which one records/streams it? |

If the cloud is actually involved in this, then the amount of streams becomes irrelevant .. I just hope whatever it is, it can be price competitive with CBLVs' current cloud multi room offering ... |

said by johnmax:said by TitusTroy:who on earth records 10-12 programs at the same time...talk about overkill... The same people that need to record hundreds of hours on their DVRs and complain about how they don't have enough space. I don't get that either. Who has time to watch all that stuff? Get a hobby or job or go enjoy the fresh air. A family of 5 shouldn't need more than what we have with our current setup. It's not about watching everything, it's about having a wide variety of content available to watch when you sit down to watch TV. I know I record alot of content with my Roamio Pro TiVo. But I don't watch anywhere near all of it. Not even close to 50%. But I never know what I will be in the mood to watch. I might feel like watching one thing when I leave work, and by the time I sit down to watch several hours later I'll feel like watching something else. It's also why I subscribe to multiple streaming services, multiple BD rental stores, and purchase a bunch of BD titles. I want a wide variety of content to choose from when I actually sit down to watch something. For instance tonight. I had no idea I would feel like watching an episode of the Twilight Zone, before the Walking Dead, but I did. And I was able to because I have a Season Pass set on my TiVo for it. That is not something I would normally watch, especially since it is in a 4:3 aspect ratio and is in Black and White. |

This whole thing is nothing more than marketing. It's the "mine is bigger than yours" mentality. Cablevision has a 10-tuner DVR? Oh yeah, well we have a 12-tuner DVR. It makes people think they are getting more even though a 12-tuner DVR has no practical use for 99% of customers. Same thing for internet. The only reason Quantum exists is so Verizon can market it as faster internet than Cablevision or other companies. 99% of customers have no practical reason to upgrade. |

It makes perfect sense if you read the entire post, not just the section you highlighted. |

This is all a "mine is bigger than yours" marketing ploy. What the rep took is the 6 tuners with max 2 dvr boxes and poof you got 12 tuners!
So in the end he's talking about the same 6 tuner box we've been talking about for months. |

I would be satisfied with 4 tuners. |

Well currently some of my HD feeds go to 20 Mbps, so that is NOT going to fly for cloud DVR unless they transcode them to mpeg4 or some even more compressed format a-la Netflix using adaptive bitrate.
That certainly is going to make the picture WORSE not better, but I think for the masses that will work just fine.
My company sells the storage and I know for a fact they all use dedupe, because they couldn't afford direct copies, and Aereo does also.
From this perspective cloud DVR makes a lot of sense because then a "tuner" is simply a unique storage ID for a program (a few meg) that they can run out of regional Terremark datacenters.
In fact one they have a cloud DVR, there really is NO reason (other than some stupid content contract) to simply make all TV VoD. Think about it...
If they can keep bitrate to VoD-ish then 3-4 streams going on at the same time is not out of this world. |

Not trying to hijack the thread but what's with this? I had a router issue and went to the store and upgraded to a newer model but my store never charged me anything, they just asked me if I would like to upgrade and gave me a new one. Are some stores charging you for the router if you upgrade? |

And when networks run their shows 1 or 2 minutes long it means you are trying to record 3 shows at the same time. Even if for only 2 minutes. |

Grimm, Hawaii 5-0, Sleepy Hollow, America's Next Top Model & Shark Tank all at 9 PM & all wanted by Household members, & that's without mentioning any cable shows ( Gold Rush) ... or needing a tuner for watching live TV or VOD! |

Why do you record the encore showing of Sleepy Hollow on Friday? Are you unable to record it on Monday? |

Was none this Monday .. Thought it was a new ep ... |

Yeah the playoffs caused it to be off a few weeks. It returns Monday. |
