Slow downs ...

We've had Start cable for just under a year now. Every so often, 1 to 2 months or so, we start to see various web sites load slowly, online poker starts to give timeouts, pings to Google show some high 800-1200ms response times, all the while speed tests show normal. It's nothing like an overloaded connection at the time, Tomato shows minimal bandwidth usage at those times, no torrents are running, etc. I know that individually these don't necessarily indicate a connection issue, but if I do a reset on my Technicolor DCM476, immediately all this goes away and the connection is stable and fast again for a while until we notice the above happening again. It's like something gets the modem bogged down after a period of time, and the reset clears it out. Is it normal for cable to have to reset the modem every so often like this to maintain a fast connection or is something funny going on?

Here's my modem stats:

Status Code: Operational
Software Version: STAC.02.50
Software Model: a81a
Bootloader: 2.3.1

Your power levels look pretty good, don't see upstream power that low commonly but lower is generally better with upstream.

Although you've noted your Tomato firmware is reporting low traffic, you should check every computer device to ensure its not uploading and saturating the upstream when you see pings in the high hundreds.

When the slowness occurs again, instead of factory resetting the modem, take out the router and plug a computer in and see if it's still slow. Good idea to boot into safe mode with networking as well just to be certain the minimal amount of Windows services and programs are running.

If you still see the slow speeds then, probably need to give Start's support a call.

No other devices are on that would be consuming bandwidth and I have QOS setup in the router to manage the upstream and keep enough available for my voip line. The issues aren't localized to any specific period of time when something else is running, and the issues don't go away until the modem is reset. The fact that a reset of the modem, which is independent of anything else going on in my network, fixes the issues immediately would suggest something is up with the modem, no?

Could you run a tracert to google and maybe torix.ca?

Looks like you are getting some heavy ping spikes, and it starts from the node.

whats interesting is the .rogerstelecom.net, I've never seen that before.

Has rogers been doing work in your area?

The rogerstelecom.net domain name is new but nothing to be concerned, it's in my traces as well:

Seems there could be some packet loss going on. Though like I suggested, you should try without the router involved (computer direct to the modem). Not speculating the router but it's standard troubleshooting to rule out everything you can thoroughly.

Try running WinMTR as well to a few hosts/sites and see where it reports there is packet loss.

Here's the traces connected directly to the modem which look good ... however I did have to reset the modem to take the new mac ...

From the looks of it, the modem needed a reset. Are you still having issues while connected to the modem?

Here's me connected back to the router ... again after a modem reset all looks fine ...

No issues directly connected to the modem, but I did have to reset the modem to connect directly, so I'm not sure what that proves. Now I'm back through the router and everything still looks fine, again it was after a modem reset.

So, any thoughts on what would cause the modem to degrade over time?

It's not the modem degrading (at least not conclusively), factory resetting forces it to to a full re-sync on of RF signal.

You'll probably want to contact Start's support.
