How to tell if W8 hard drive is set up in IDE or AHCI mode?

Is there anyway in Windows 8 to detect if a drive is set to AHCI mode?

Is that revealed in Computer Management or in Device Manager or anywhere else?

Registry perhaps?

Don't know about win8, but when I switched win7 to AHCI, all the hard drives, including c:\ became listed under 'removable drives' menu item in the taskbar.

That's not normal.

Not according to the Windows 7 machines I have running fixed disks through storage controllers in AHCI mode, no. None of them show fixed AHCI disks as removable.

But in addition to that, main question is how to tell, if we can in W7 or W8, how a hard drive is setup, i.e. AHCI or not?

What is normal?

I think it's pretty reasonable to guess that a fixed disk being listed as 'removable' is not normal.

main question is how to tell ...

I'm not able to answer that until I get home to look at computers there (and perhaps not even then). Meanwhile, though, is there some reason you can't look in the BIOS?

FWIW, I believe it's the controller that's in AHCI/IDE mode, not the individual disk.

Could've sworn that by design, enabling AHCI on sata ports enabled hotswapping.

Could be controller-dependent. My internal desktop SATA ports don't support hotswapping.

Either way, you're right that if OP checks the BIOS, it should say.
