[Environmental] Temperature monitoringI am looking for a system that can monitor several remote temperature probes. I would like to place several around the house such as various rooms, HVAC return and send, attic, and outdoor. Living here in AZ, I would like to know how my cooling is performing. I am thinking 5-10 probes. Most locations I can easily access to run a cable.
Thanks. |

Check out the CAI WebControl. It'll take 8 DB18B20 temperature sensors. I use them in my building management system. |

I've also used the CAI WebControl for greenhouse and wood stove control. It is a cheap PLC that includes a web interface. As alphapointe posted it supports up to 8 1-wire digital temp sensors and a single Honeywell humidity sensor. » www.cainetworks.com/prod ··· log.html$30 on eBay » www.ebay.com/itm/Remote- ··· d85927ebIf you don't need any external logic get one with an enclosure. » www.ebay.com/itm/WebCont ··· 0d79a2c9Even have a forum: » cocoontech.com/forums/fo ··· control/They are developing a more sophisticated version but if all you need is temperated the current one should work great. /tom |

This is just what I am looking for! I see it will allow 8 each 1 wire temp sensors. I ass/u/me they are all wired in parallel to the 1 wire sensor input terminals? |

Correct You select which sensor goes to which input.

alphapointe How long a run do you have on your sensors to controller? |

The longest one I have is probably 70' of cat5... I had to put surge protectors on the ones to the chiller room (ran next to 480v feeds), but I haven't had any trouble with them at that distance. |

Impressive. I forget how long a run tschmidt has but I don't think he has 480V to worry about |

said by SparkChaser:I forget how long a run tschmidt has but I don't think he has 480V to worry about Mine is residential so just 120/240. I did have a problem with dehumidifier being on the same circuit but once that was moved both systems have been very stable. Greenhouse runs 24/7 and wood stove just 10 hours or so each time we fire up the stove. Had GH controller crash once over the last year during a lightning storm. Total 1-wire sensor wiring for greenhouse is about 130 feet (7 sensors), wood stove is 40 feet (3 sensors) Per the Dallas app notes best practice is buss topology and keep stubs under a meter or so to reduced reflections. /tom |

said by pende_tim:I ass/u/me they are all wired in parallel to the 1 wire sensor input terminals? Correct each 1-wire device has a unique serial number allowing multiple devices to share the buss. It is actually three wires: 5V Vcc, Gnd, Data. 1-wire interface is Open Collector TTL so as alphapointe discovered it is susceptible to noise ingress. But given how simple it is it is surprisingly robust. /tom |

Be careful with the 1-wire sensors such as DS18B20, there is a maximum length of wire that can be used reliably. Also several shorter wires in parallel will impact the reliability. Ideally try to keep it under 100ft TOTAL. |

This could be my winter project!!!
I would like to use this system to monitor my Heat Pump.
Basically I would install 3 sensors in the AHU: 1 on the inlet, #2 just after the A coil and #3 just after the strip heaters at the discharge.
Can it do any "math" and timer storage? For instance subtract #3 from #1 for a Delta T, Subtract #2 coil from #3 to indicate if strips are "on". Show elapsed time time #3 > #1 for running time and Show elapsed time #3>#2 for strip heat and show elapsed time #1>#2 for defrost time?
Where can I find out more?????

I would like to use this system to monitor my Heat Pump. You would need to continuously poll the device and log to a database. Easy if you are at least average at programming, you *WILL* encounter errors that must be accounted fore in the code... been there done that... actually still doing |

My device takes care of logging by itself, it automatically uploads data to a web interface on input change and/or periodically, saves data to a local queue (flash card) if the logging web server is down so that not a single event is being lost...
