I remember also. Ouch!! I remember the expressions on my parents' faces. One, my mom, was a secretive democrat. Secretive, because my dad was a staunch Republican.

I dont remember the day of the shooting but I do remember watching the funeral. Mom had the drapes closed and just the light of the old black and white TV in the room. My fathers cousin was one of the marines who carried the coffin and escorted it as part of the honor guard. It was grey and cold and rainy that day in Connecticut. One of my earliest and most profound memories of my childhood.

I vividly remember the first news of the assassination -- I was three months into my year in Italy and still didn't have a great command of Italian, but when the news came on Channel One (the only television broadcast channel at the time) I understood the impact immediately.

Most Italians have a great affection for America -- with so many relatives living here -- and I found that in the days following Nov. 22, many of my Italian friends, and even strangers, went out of their way to express their condolences and sympathy.

I can't remember much from back then. I don't recognize old friends by faces, and my long term memory is poor, but I do remember watching the procession, I remember how upset we were, I was scared and confused, I was just a little guy. My family and friends that vote on the right side of things all say what could have been had he lived, he was universally loved.

Remember getting sent home from school in Massachusetts, and not quite grasping the "why" of it at the time.

Think I began to get it when I saw the riderless horse with the back facing boots at the President's funeral....

I do remember. Once coming out of shock, probably a couple or three months later, I also remember being certain nothing would ever shock me so completely again. Then came Septemer 11, 2001.

These days I just don't recover from the continual jarring news. It is the new normal. :/
