Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5.1 for Windows 7 x64-based Systems (KB2858725)

Just received an off cycle MS "important" update notification:

Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5.1 for Windows 7 x64-based Systems (KB2858725)

Download size: 53.0 MB

You may need to restart your computer for this update to take effect.

Update type: Recommended

The Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5.1 is a highly compatible, in-place update to the .NET Framework 4 and 4.5. By using the .NET Framework 4.5.1 together with the C# or Visual Basic programming languages, you can write Windows Store apps. The .NET Framework 4.5.1 delivers better performance, reliability, and security than previous versions. After you install this update, you may have to restart your computer.

Question:

If I always have .NET disabled do I need to keep installing these massive and never-ending .NET updates?

For me, .NET seems to have no benefit except to slow down my otherwise well-maintained system.

-----

And I am even more pissed at Microsoft for offering me a BING BAR update on a regular basis. I have no use for BING or "Bing Bar" or "Bing Desktop" but hiding these updates does not matter bcause they keep changing the names....

I'm of the opinion, if you don't need it, don't install it.
And of yet, I've not run across anything that specifically has needed 4.5.1, so for me, forget about it.

Plus, I'm not even sure just what this is?
Is it 4.5.1, plus language packs, or something like that?
Or is it only language packs, or...?

> If I always have .NET disabled

How do you "disable" .NET?

> massive and never-ending .NET updates?

Tell me about it! .NET is likely larger then the OS itself!

> .NET seems to have no benefit except to slow down my otherwise well-maintained system.

It's a built-in virus, IMO.

If you wanted "4.5.1" I would think you'd get it from here (or from the "stub" installer):

Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5.1 (Offline Installer) for Windows Vista SP2, Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8, Windows Server 2008 SP2 Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 and Windows Server 2012

How do you "disable" .NET?

You cannot totally get it out of the body. Like the chickenpox virus, it will always remain there.

But this is what I do:

1) Logged in as an Administrator, go to the Start Menu, and in the RUN box type services.msc

2) When the list of services comes up, do a [Stop] and then do a [Disable] on the entry that says [Microsoft.NET framework....] There may be multiple entries.

3) Close, then Reboot.

4) After that, logged in as an Administrator, go to the Control Panel, and select "Programs and Features" (at least on Windows 7, others may differ a little).

5) On the next screen, on the left side select "Turn Windows Features On/Off".

6) On the list that appears, uncheck any lines related to Microsoft .NET Framework.

7) Close.

YMMV. Keep in mind that some programs may need .NET such as some art and graphics programs....

But I am pretty successful at living without it. Despite what some supporters say, it does slow down my machines, and certainly slows down defragging.

Yep. I run a couple that require it.

Periodically somebody turns up on the graphics boards I hang out on who complains the software in question is buggy and won't run right. We find out later they've turned .NET off. Which would be fine, it's their choice, but they waste a whole lot of time and effort because they never think to mention it up front.

You are exactly right.

What has caused [me] problems, though, is software developers who write programs that need .NET but they never mention this in the "system requirements".

I have downloaded programs of various sorts which turned out to require it, yet that fact was never mentioned in advance.

Individual developers or even companies to whom I have complained about this, tend to respond to me along the lines of "only a lunatic or a criminal would refuse to use .NET".

Whereas I do [not] believe that it is a core component of the OS.

I've just only seen this on mine now and have elected not installing it.
Just to clarify the below is what I'm seeing offered. There's some buzz on this one if it should be applied or not. Have put a bit of a word out for feedback.

I find it annoying that some programs require .NET.

I finally reinstalled Silverlight because of twctv.com streaming videos. The last time I had to install and use it was for Olympics (2010's winter games?). Ugh.

.NET is nothing but a platform upon which programs are written. It does a lot of things that ordinarily the developer would have to write a ton of code to do. It allows for rapid application development and easier development for the developer.

I myself write a program that uses .NET, you might have seen it in passing in the Software forum on this site.

Anyways, .NET is not inherently bad. Yes, it does sometimes have bugs in it but what software doesn't.

I understand the usefulness of .NET for developers.

My gripe is really more with Microsoft....

One main issue with the .NET framework are the large number of different versions, and AFAICT the newer versions often do not build on the older ones (and sometimes are VERY different like 3.5.1) so that multiple versions are needed on the computer.

IOW, backwards compatibility is a mess.

Yes, I admit that that is an issue that plagues .NET. What a lot of developers should do is try to migrate their programs to at least .NET 4.0 since that's the newest version that covers just about every modern version of Windows including Windows XP.

It shouldn't be too hard to just "flip the switch" to .NET 4.0 in the Visual Studio Project Settings.

Another point of view .....

Skip this serving of .NET Framework 4.5.1

'..... NET 4 might have fewer problems, but it’s still not completely error-free. Moreover, Microsoft likes to proactively update .NET on Windows systems; it’s highly unlikely that you’ll need .NET 4.5.1 anytime soon. Most software built on this platform hasn’t rolled out yet.'

And if a developer had any brains in their head they wouldn't be targeting 4.5 yet. 4.5 doesn't run on Windows XP, Vista is the oldest OS that 4.5 supports so that means if you make your app for 4.5 you're basically telling all Windows XP users to go jump in a lake.

XP had less .NET requirements than Windows 7 & Windows 8.1 although you can skip over this one as it was post patch Tuesday.

Well, I have used this tool to fully remove .NET off my systems:

»blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archiv···493.aspx

Thus, my current state is .NOT

-----

Even before full removal, I had disabled all versions of .NET and have rarely missed it.

In a similar regard, I bet that lots and lots of people who faithfully keep updating Shockwave, don't actually have a need for Shockwave....

Comparing .Net to Java... I'll take .Net. Java is a security nightmare with a lot more backwards incompatibility issues. Nothing is worse then being stuck on a vulnerable Java version because the enterprise go to application vendor won't move.

Well, this is true for sure.

Actually, I no longer have Java on my machines either.

So 3 things gone:

Java
.NET
Shockwave

And at least for my heavy browsing, and my wife's gaming, we have not missed them....

Thanks....Figured something was in the wind..I use the weather channel app on one of my Win7 systems for a while now and just yesterday when the PC came out of sleep the app would not load but rather had a small window stating Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5.1 was required. I shut it down then turned it back on again and everything worked fine. Guess in the impending days it will come up again. I have MS updates turned off so will wait until the app no longer works before I do this one

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.

For example:

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.

That's not a .NET problem, that's a program problem. Somewhere in the code the code referenced an pointer that had no object attached. .NET is an Object Oriented Programming Language so if you have a pointer or variable that isn't pointing to an object and you try and reference it you will get a Null Reference Exception.

Like for instance...

Dim myStreamReader As System.IO.StreamReader
Dim myFileContents As String = myStreamReader.ReadToEnd.Trim

The above code would cause a Null Reference Exception since we are accessing a pointer that has no object attached to it.

Dim myStreamReader As New System.IO.StreamReader("myfile.txt")
Dim myFileContents As String = myStreamReader.ReadToEnd.Trim

The above code will work because not only have I created a pointer but I created an Object too that the pointer points to.

Agreed.
Hours? Really?
If it's taking 4 hours to update there is something seriously messed up on that computer. It took roughly under 5 minutes to download, apply, and for disk activity to die down.
