Westell Versalink D90-327W14-06

I am using a SBC yahoo provided above model number modem with a different service provider outside US. Till last week there are no issues but I have this strange problem. I can open only couple of websites in browser like google, youtube... If try to open Facebook, I can see that the browser looks like it reached the website but it fails to load. I can ping the website and tried using its IP but no luck. Looked all settings nothing strange because I have never changed any default settings for last 5 years since I started using it.

To isolate if the problem is with ISP or modem, I manually created a PPPoE connection on PC and hooked up cable to same modem and if I connect to ISP using it, I can access everything. Could not understand why the built-in PPP connection from the modem is limiting my internet access.

Does this Westell use the White and Blue or the Red and Black Firmware?

So that you can answer my question, here are two example router screen shots.

White and blue firmware »www.pcwintech.com/screen ··· firmware

Red and Black firmware »screenshots.portforward. ··· ault.htm

Ok.

#1 While behind the modem combo..

a) Go to Status -> Connection Summary

b) What DNS Servers are listed there?

c) Go to Configuration -> Advanced LAN -> DNS

d) What DNS Servers are listed there?

e) Go to Configuration -> Firewall

f) What level is it set to?

#2 What DNS Servers when using PPPoE on your computer?

An example of how to check that.

Note: This example assumes that you are on Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8.

a) Press the Windows Start key to open the Start screen.

b) Type cmd and press Enter to launch the command prompt.

Note: You do not need to click on anything on the Start screen—typing will automatically initiate a program search.

c) Type ipconfig /all at the command prompt to check the network card settings.

-> If not on Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8 and you do not know how to check that network info - what is your OS and Version?

Thanks for your reply and sorry I had to wait to get to the modem which is on the other side of the world. The DNS servers seems to be the same when connected via PC or modem. I am posting the gathered info to have a look. I see reverse DNS failing from modem's log don't know why and how to fix that. Firewall status is set to low by default and it is same when connected via PC or modem. I also set it to None but no difference anyway.

Hmm..

How about telling your computer to use the DNS Servers of 218.248.255.141 and 218.248.245.1, does that help?

If you do not how to, see »store.opendns.com/setup/ ··· omputer/ but do not set your computer to use OpenDNS as your DNS Server(s) to use - unless you want to...

I tried that too and it did not work. I also actually tried OpenDNS and Google's DNS servers.

#1 Odd, did you flush your DNS resolver cache and web browser caches to ensure that your new DNS configuration settings take immediate effect?

If you do not how to do that, OpenDNS has info on how to do that.

#2 While I know your computer is connected to the Westell and the Westell can act as a RJ-45 WAN port router, do you have a RJ-45 WAN port router that does not include a DSL port? For example the Linksys E4200v1

Note the RJ-45 WAN port router without a DSL port might be not in use / In storage, right now.

I didn't do the flush DNS but I remember that when I did ipconfig, I can see the new DNS servers(whatever I put in manually) listed in output. I used IE and Chrome and I can see them accessing sites from same session when dialed from PC. Currently there is no additional router available.

Ok, you may or may not like this.

#1 First things first: I point to and quote from DSLR(dslreports.com) -> Forums -> Broadband Tech -> Networking -> Modem/router(not in bridge mode) + router the reply by DSLR user clarknova (#1713475) on 2013-Sep-18 at 2:13 pm
quote:
There are some good reasons to have a modem bridge rather than route. I can't speak for all modems, but generally speaking:

1. Modems don't have much memory compared to a good router, so open a few sessions from the LAN and watch as connections get dropped, or worse, the modem/router just locks.

2. Modems tend to lack features compared to a good router. Things like QoS, DHCP reservation, VPN, uPNP, static routes, etc get left out. You can provide your own router behind the modem, as you did, but this can lead to other complications, such as

3. Double NAT. Most things can be made to work with double NAT, just as it's entirely possible to assemble a jigsaw puzzle while wearing oven mitts. It takes longer and the probability of making a mistake while setting it up or troubleshooting goes up. Simplicity is a good rule to live by when setting up networks.

#2 Advice: Get your own RJ-45 WAN port router and put the modem combo into bridge mode. As how to get the modem combo into bridge mode..

a) ..see »Verizon DSL FAQ »How do I use a router with the Westell 6100?

AND (OR)

b) ..you may need to contact your ISP and get help from them.

^^

Note about that FAQ that I pointed you to: While I know your ISP is not Verizon and I know what the title of the FAQ is..

a) ..one of the things that it says in the FAQ is
quote:
These instructions apply to the Westell 2200, 6100, 6100F, 327W, and 7500 models.
AND

b) ...it covers both the Red and Black and the White and Blue Firmware.

Have you power cycled both modems and PC?

Yes. I did that couple of times and couple of modem resets as well. PC reboot also performed.
