When my house was built, they ran all the cable jacks to terminate up in the attic above a 2nd floor. My current Comcast install basically just goes through 1 side wall on the first floor to a modem which I use a wireless router to push internet access and the phones connect via the existing phone lines into the modem.
Would the TV portion of the service be required to terminate up in the attic to utilize all the cables to the other rooms? Depends on local policies but in my FFO its possible but not PLAUSIBLE. Its generally a bad idea to split up splitter locations, they shoudl ALL go in the On Premise Box or a smart panel location,
Would Comcast do that install like that for an upgrade? Again depends on local policies and what condition the cables are in. In my FFO no, we do nto go in unfinished attics so I would require you either get the house rewired by a contractor for prewiring type work or have us post wire it. [pre means wall fish, post means wrap the outside of the house and drill a hole through the wall]
Also, is there a minimum spec the cable should be in my house to support X1 and possibly any room DVR functionality? Yes it must be RG6, recommended 70% or better shielding on the braid and tri shielded or better, and the splitters must all be in a central location so you can control passive loss on the lines, that does not mean it can't work but that is the official requirement in writing which you do not meet at this time using the splitter in the attic and a splitter in the OPB. For X1 and anyroom DVR service this is a risky design.
