Lawyer Falls For Nigerian Inheritance Scam, Gets Suspended

Above the Law
quote:
Which is worse: to be unethical or to be stupid — really, really stupid?

Who says you have to choose? That’s the lesson of today’s story about a lawyer who fell for a Nigerian inheritance scam, dragged his clients into the mess as well, and just got his law license suspended by the Iowa Supreme Court.

Dear Friend: Please permit me to make your acquaintance in so informal a manner. This is necessitated by my urgent need to reach a dependable and trust wordy partner. We do not know each other, it does not matter.

This story will not cause discomfort or embarrassment in whatever form, except to a monumentally moronic lawyer — who got cleared on some (but not all) of the ethics charges against him because he genuinely believed that a trunk full of money was going to magically show up on his office doorstep….

Reading that report reminded me of the Tale of the Three Sillies that I read as a child:

Paid his money, attended class, passed the exams. No common sense required.

It's not that easy, many JD programs grade on a curve. Not to mention one still has to pass the bar. Intelligence != wisdom

Not necessarily. I've known some very intelligent people who couldn't produce a cup of wisdom between them. Wisdom is the using of the output of intelligence in proper fashion.

From the Des Moines Register, one of the "Ten most influential black Iowans" is his dad:

Robert A. Wright Sr.

Robert A. Wright Sr. was born in 1925, a native of Des Moines' impoverished Southeast Bottoms. He graduated from the University of Iowa in 1949, where he was a football standout, and from Drake University law school in 1954. He achieved his law degree while serving as a Des Moines police officer and became a respected attorney.

Wright's greatest contribution to Iowa has been as a civil-rights activist and longtime leader of the State Conference of NAACP Branches. The first Iowan to serve on the NAACP's national board of directors, Wright has participated in hundreds of civil-rights cases across Iowa for half a century and is known as "Mr. Civil Rights."

That probably helped smooth his way.

Agree, I think the next question is how many of those clients were dumb enough to make the "investment."

I am suing this guy to recover $10,000,000 in damages for his clients. But we're a little short on funds. Lend me $250,000 towards the lawsuit, and you can have 10% of the eventual award.

It's a deal. Please contact my Bitcoin repository, GBL Hong Kong, for payment arrangements.

Sounds like some Madoff investors.

In his own words..
quote:
"My investors were sophisticated people, smart enough to know what was going on and how money was made. But they still invested with me without any explanations. "
