[BC] Small speed bump

Has anyone else in the lower mainland, or Port Coquitlam area noticed a small speed bump in their internet speeds recently?

I have the BB100 package and I noticed it first this morning when downloading a game off of Steam, that it was going 12.5MB/s-12.6MB/s, which for 100Mbit generally you wouldn't expect (due to overhead and what not.)

I checked speed tests on speedtest.net and it seems to confirm the slight increase - I'm getting around 109Mbps down/5.5Mbps up, whereas previously it was almost always around 97Mbps down/4.8Mbps up.

Anyways, I was just wondering if anyone else noticed this as well, and if it means that possibly network updates are (finally?) happening.

I just switched to Telus so I can't tell you. I'll get a friend of mine near Southridge to check.

Yes they have indeed changed the caps slightly, I am in Victoria and I noticed the increase since Monday.

I have BB50 and when downloading BF4 off Origin I am getting 7.8MB/s download which would put us over 60Mbps download, my upload has topped out at 3.6Mbps.

My guess is maybe they are slightly increasing the caps to compensate for overhead so that when people go to download a file they are actually getting the full 50Mbps speed as advertised.

That or someone goofed LOL, but which ever may be the case oh well Thanks for the free increase Shaw ^_^

This is the business 50 connection. Used to always be 48 down 4.8 up.

Now 53 down 5.3 up. There was 500kb upload going when i did this test. Sorry can't cutoff client connections for this crap lol.

And here is the Res 250. Would never get >15mbit upload before.

Nothing here in victoria. My bb50 still maxes out around 48.5mbps. Which I'm not complaining about cause that's pretty solid, just no bump

zod you have to power down and fully reboot the modem to get the new speeds (yes that means wait atleast 30 seconds with it off). everyone should be getting them. if your not its cause you havnt rebooted modem

heres my bb100

my downstream provisioned rate is now 112mbps rather then the 100.7 it was before. with overhead and rounding it comes out to about 107.

That did the trick. Getting 53.3mbps down on speedtest.net now. 3.18mbps up.

That's amost a 5mbps bump... not too shabby

Thanks.

glad it worked for you Zod i was also happy to see about 10mbps jump on bb100, as i used to only get 97 down. and i would also like to correct my last post in that my old provisioned rate was note 100.7 ( i thought it was 100.7 or 101.7 but i guess i was wrong) it used to be 102.4mbps for bb100 now its around 112 for bb100

it seems like overhead and rounding will always take about 5% off the provisioned rate. good shaw is finally acknowledging this. as it was kinda sad that no one really ever got full speeds on there plans.

here are some images of what the modem stats used to look like on shaws end. i dont have any for the newly provisioned speeds tho

BB100 - »snag.gy/QAWxt.jpg

BB50 - »snag.gy/KVbIG.jpg

now what i dont understand, is why shaw would take the work to essentially create new provisioning codes, without implementing phase 2 speeds. since bb250 got the bump, shouldnt phase 2 bb50 and phase 2 bb100, like 50/5 and 100/10 be bumped up to about 53/5.5 and 100/11?

also im very curious if this newly provisioned codes are provided to TSI and there customers as well.

It won't be new provisioning codes, they would just have adjusted the profiles for the codes already in use.

I suspect that the TSI ones were increased as well (haven't seen anything yet against this statement)

did you unplug the modem, wait 30 seconds, and plug it back in? I didn't see the speed upgrade until a previous poster pointed that out to me. The modem needs to burn turn off/on to reconnect at the faster speed.

Yep, I left it unplugged for about 30 minutes while running some errands. I wonder if it might have something to do with my area not having DNU complete (only 3Mbps upload on BB50)

Oh. I had residential 50 in Surrey. I had 3 up back then mixed in with some node congestion during the day. Doesn't matter anymore because I have Telus now.

I have Telus 50 as well, obviously. Biggest positive for my Shaw biz 50 over my Telus 50 is static IP's. Biggest downfall being the upload speed. All personal servers I've got on the Shaw biz.

Small bump here in Penticton on the 100 package. Hope 250 will be available here soon.

Call me greedy, but I won't be satisfied until my upload is atleast 10Mb

Wait for Telus Business 50/10 My theory why they don't have one yet is because the lacking of a bonding dumb modem. Although I can't see why they could use the Actiontec with no antennas and a bridge mode option.

Has anyone tried to get the 50/10 but as a biz connection? Obviously I qualify as I already have it. Would be interesting to see if they would provide me with a static address. The new firmware with just basic permissions allow static addresses to be entered?
